Boys will already be getting dark feathers on their shoulders, girls will not. Girls will stay lighter and the boys just keep getting darker...

So the shoulder feathers are the ones to watch and not the wing feathers? We have 8 chicks total and 2 show very little color on the wing feathers and 6 show coloring.

Wheaten girls will have beige/cream colored feathers, Boy get dark fast...so I would geuess you have 2 girls & sorry, 6 boys...

And, yes the wing feathers will start to brown out!

I guess that's the way it goes sometimes, we have more boys than girls from another breed that we hatched out to this year so far. We'll watch and see what comes over the next few days to weeks, we're hoping to grow out a pair for 1 of our kids to show for 4-H along with the parent pair. Thanks

The wing feathers will start to grow out a 2tone darkish color, and the shoulder feathers will grow real dark. Females stay light for a while and their feathers are more cream color..

Here is another pic of Midnight my Black Ameraucana hen.

I couldn't find any of my Wheaten male at this age, but this is a Blue Wheaten cockerel, around 3-4 weeks. Notice the darker gray/blue feathering. A Wheaten cockerel instead would have all black and as chics in the sun posted pullets will have creamy brown feathers growing in.

Here's 2 cockerels at about 5 weeks, one blue wheaten and one wheaten so you can see the difference coloration. I wish I did the same with the pullets because this question gets asked a lot. Maybe next hatch
