Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

pips&peeps :

Yeah, I just got my NPIP renewed again!

I spent four hours with the vet tech Monday drawing blood to send in and got it overnighted before the holidays. They tested it all when they received it yesterday, must have been a slow day......

Great job!

It costs $85.00 per hour for a State Vet to do it. (Would have cost around $340.00)

But, I had a vet tech from my local vet office do it for $50.00 plus supplies. You also have to pay for the testing which is around $30.00. So I'm in it around $100-$125 when all is said and done.

Hey everyone I have decided to sell out of ameraucana I posted a add in BST its 6 pullets and one cockeral. One blue and black are DIRECTLY from Paul Smith. The cockeral is from Will Marrow at Whitmore farm. I am leaving for college and my parents want me to cut down to just bantams ahead of time. I am not interested in shipping. The pullets are laying nice blue eggs not mint green like many BBS ameraucana. Hope you guys are interested PM or email me for details or post on the BST thread.

Thanks,
Henry

aww so sorry to hear you have to sell them. If they are still available in the spring

I will let you know if I still have them they are great birds and would make a great addition to anyones flock I will let you know if I come up to NY for any reason. I am hopeing to move them pretty soon because I want to start hatching faverolles and I may be getting some buff brahma and araucana bantams.

Ideal only sells Easter Eggers, sorry. They are nice birds, but definitely not Ameraucanas. No big hatchery sells Ameraucanas to my knowledge.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

Jean, I posted something about tihs on another thread about a week or so ago. Maybe it was this one. Can't remember. I was thinking that it was $80/hr but that is of really no matter. I wanted to add that the $85/hr starts from the time the vet gets in his car (for me that's in Oly) and doesn't stop until he gets back to the office. So when one considers that 6-8 hours of time on the road plus another 2 hours or so to prep, test, and clean up it doesn't take much to see that I'm looking at $680 to $850 bucks minimum. When I consider how many chicks I'd have to sell and ship just to break even, it just ain't worth it to me.

My hope is that enough folks will opt out of participating that the State will revisit the Law they passed this year mandating the above. See, the State gets Federal Funding for the NPIP program as long as it stays PT free. If a case of PT shows up, the State loses it's funding. With that being said, one would think the State would be encouraging participation in the Program - not discouraging participation by making it cost prohibitive! Maybe if nobody gets NPIP certified (except for the commercial folks which are required to do so in order to stay in business) the impact would be enough for them to realize the risk vs. reward factor is too lop-sided and they'll retract the law or make it more cost acceptable.

Btw, I got a call from a vet last week. He wanted to come by and get a dozen eggs from me so he could test them for AI. Two years ago the State paid me $10 a dozen to test them for AI. They'd come by once a quarter. Last year they suspended the program for lack of funding. This year he calls me up and wanted me to donate a dozen eggs each quarter. Well, at first he didn't even said that. It wasn't until after I asked, "So how much are they paying for the eggs now?" that he informs me I'd be donating them. I told him no thanks. I sell my eggs for $3 or $4 a dozen. That little donation is tantamount to me paying $12-16 a year to the State to test my eggs for their benefit. I told him I wouldn't mind doing that if it weren't for the recent NPIP law they passed. He said he understands and agrees and there are a lot of folks who seem to feel the same way.

I hope others in WA will do the same and let your voices be heard. Oh Jean, I know you did write your letter as I did so that isn't referring to you.

God Bless,

Vermont does AI and P-T testing for free on the farm. The technician swabs the birds' throats for AI and the swabs go to the lab. The P-T test is done on a glass plate right in front of you via a vein prick under the wing. They do not need eggs to do AI testing far as I know.
