Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Awww! Sorry- but you will love the wheatens too! I guess the bad news hit a lot of people yesterday. They were sold out before I had a chance to order, so I'll just work with what I got and keep swapping eggs. If they don't ALL go broody, that is.

oh yes, that is our little wheaten or blue wheaten am. pullet. The chicken calculator says splash roo x wheaten hen = blue chicks, do I read that right?

Well- yes, but the offspring may have red leakage from the wheaten coloring and may also not breed true. Wouldn't recommend that crossing. It's best to keep blue, black and splash together and then the wheatens together. (for breeding purposes)

roger that, kinda just wondering based on the calc., truly I am leaning towards the splash as my Avant-garde. I like the blues, I like the blacks, the Wheatens are growing on me- I met a gentleman in N. Ga. who has some very nice wheaten birds, just around the corner from my in-laws, makes it worth the trip.

I am also interested in the

Silver x black = black, all split for silver
Blue x black = blacks and blues
Blue x white = blues and blacks, all split for recessive white providing the whites have both copies

Thanks
Dawn

When doing either of the crosses to get the splits, the blacks or blues resulting should be kept seperate from your oither blues and blacks; otherwise those recessive colors will be cropping out in your own or other's flocks. Recessive white may be covering genes for barring, mottling, silver, or splash blue, and I've encoutered dominate white in an Ameraucana also....................... makes for a bit of a crap shoot on doing splits.

Is it possible for a Dominant White Ameraucana to show black feathering like Splash?

>>This is what I was quoted from a Breeder(that I purchased her from) who has bred since 1980 or so( I would rather not bring them into the discussion unless they wish to join)

"There are two types of white.Recessive white when crossed with a color gives you a bird showing only color but carrying white.Dominate white when crossed with a color gives you a white bird showing some of that color. In this case black since lavender is black with 2 copies of the gene that turns it lavender.Since they are split carrying one copy of the lavender gene the color you see will be black.Dominate white is easier to remove from a bloodline since all carriers will show white."

Hope this helps

I think my new experiment with incubating must be working..........I am tickled with what I got.

Oh, Karen! I am so envious. I guess I won't be getting the lavenders this year. I've thought about trying to get some eggs to hatch, but I only have a small incubator, and right now it is full and will be for some time yet.

Congrats on you beautiful hatches!

Yes, it will leak both red and black, and sometimes look like a splash bird to an extent; though unless it is black diluted by bl or lav it will be black spots and should not be too difficult to tell from a genuine splash.
