Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Quote:
ummmm I am pretty sure all ameraucanas are recessive white, even the whites. One sure way to tell if is recessive or dominate is to breed to a black. Recessives will hatch black chicks(split whites) and dominates will produce white chicks when breed to blacks.

I don't know who, for sure, added the dominate white to their Ameraucanas; but I found it in a bird coming from a cross of two major breeder's lines....................... along with genes for barring and slow feather in another.

This is where you lose me. If Mike Gilbert says Dom White covers all black, where would it be possible for a Dominant white to show black?

I am aware that there is some barring genes (only single strands) floating around but also note the barred gene inhibits the dark leg color. Which is a deal breaker for ameraucanas.

Dominate white is dominate, but leaky. So, crossed to black, you get a bird with one copy of dominate white and appear visually white but with some black leaking. Red shows to a much greater extent.

one copy of dominate x one copy of dominate = 50% white and 50% black chicks

You will find more than just the whites with pale colored shanks. I suppose every breeder has different prioities and theories on how to breed their ideal bird.

I like Sands Poultry's whites, but they don't post on here too often. I can't say I'll ever own them- Sonoran ruined everything white for me when I first found BYC

Breed Standard is Slate legs...not light ... If you are interested in improving the lines you want to breed the darker slate legged fowl. Stay away from the barring and mottled genes.

Yes. When useing the color calculator however, a result that says 100% unicolor white may very well visually show black leaking in the actual birds in this instance.

So the end result whether dominate or split dominate there would be leakage....isn't that not standard, more of a project bird.

Karen,

You don't really need those two splash chicks... do you?

I'm sure they would love to come live with me!
