Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Right! We've got ducks and geese flying over. One pair of ducks makes a nest in the pond next door every year. Don't know if we have to worry about the Sandhill cranes- they aren't really migrating since they winter here, right?
Scary! I thought that waterfowl weren't susceptible to most of the chicken diseases, so this must be an exception?

What feather colors do Americaunas come in for Exhibition Stock?

Do they all produce Blue eggs or are some darker than others?

Are they all darkest at the beginning of laying 'season' and lighter at the end, maybe some variation in between?

If you cross the feather colors roo/hen mating, would the chick still be showable or is it best to keep the feather colors separate for best show stock?

I don't really want to show, but I want quality stock to raise and sell and sell the eggs. I don't know the rules on what to look for in a chicken yet, but hope to learn.

If you are getting good results in your breeding pens and selling hatching eggs, can you send me a PM so I can put you on my 'supplier list'. It is hard for a newbie to find out who is 'there' in the breeding programs and who like ME are just starting out.

I live in Northwestern OHIO.

Big thanks for helping a beginner! Is there a show book with photos of the different 'traits' I should be culling for?

My biggest interest is the darker blue eggs....

For overhead pathogens, You need roofing! In our aviaries, we had to roof to prevent the wild bird population from contaminating our flights. So much for free ranging chickens!

My chicks arrived this morning!

There were some losses.

I'm sure they got cold along the way somewhere. The remaining chicks all look pretty good. I have 9 black, 10 wheaten, one silver, one buff and one lavender. The silvers that were lost will be replaced. I'll take pictures soon.

I should be able to post some pics tomorrow. I'm really bummed right now. When I went to work all my chicks were fine. (I work crazy hours and get home around 3:30-4:00 in the morning.) When my hubby left at 10pm all the chicks were fine. When I got home at 3:30 this moring my LAVENDER CHICK was dead!

Why did it have to be the ONE lavender?

Good Morning everyone, a couple off Ameraucana eggs I purchased off ebay hatched out yesterday, and I think they look like lavenders, not blues. The were supposed to be blue black splash, but this breeder's next add after I bought my eggs said he had added a lavender roo to that pen and that some lavs were a possibility. Did I possibly end up with lavs? I just think that they are lighter in color than my last blue baby. If you think they could be, I will email the breeder to see when he added the lav roo to the breeding pen. Thanks everyone.
