Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Luke13:34 :

Hi. I don't know if this is the right place to post, but figured ya'all could point me in the right direction if not. I'm looking to get some show-quality ameraucana bantams. I am willing to buy hatching eggs or to meet in CT, NY, MA, RI for chicks or started pullets or hens. If anyone has any available, could you please PM me.. or let me know of any breeder you can recommend. The birds will be shown, but not bred. Thanks!

You could probably buy some chicks from people on the ameraucana breeders list that could grow up to be show quality. But I don't know of anyone that would sell you their show quality stock so you can show them; that's not the way it's intended to work.

Uhmmm.. then why are there auctions with SQ birds/eggs? Why do people have websites to sell SQ birds/eggs? I have a special needs daughter who shows in 4H. I don't appreciate your condescending attitude when I am simply trying to get her a beautiful bird that would be more easy for her to show than our current LF and why not try to find one that will win some ribbons for a child who has very little else going for her?

If you truely care about advancing your breed and raising the bar at competitions, why not be a little more encouraging? I would prefer eggs or chicks, but wanted to be open to getting older birds if that is what people are looking to sell.

I did 27 Wheatens at the same time and lost none so I will tell you what I did. It sort of became the running joke: "What 'ya doin' Hunny" "Cleaning chicken butts again sigh".
First thing in the morning, every few hours, last thing at night. Clean the butts. After a while I realized that by softening it under running WARM water, I could just pull it off taking a few of the feathers with the "obstruction". They did complain a little but better that than the alternative. Those with the fewer feathers pasted up less often.
I would take them out, 1 at a time and clean them. 2 at a time were then taken to the couch for "lap-time". Afterwards, each had their time in our laps until warm and comfy. Then they went into a box and the next one would come out until there were no more. I started with 2 because they are so social and scared when they are alone. I did this until they were all done and in the done-box. Then they all went back into the brooder until the next "butt check".
Hope that helps.

So far I have just been cleaning their butts once a day. The soft stuff comes off easily, but the dried on stuff I have had to "crunch" first then trim off using various tools. I am reluctant to wash their butts. I have done that with chicks in the past, but always when I had them indoors. Mine are in a brooder out in the shop, and with the cold and 40+mph winds, I didn't want to make the trip with them. I have trimmed some feathers on their butts with some scissors. I don't know if that is recommended or not, but it does seem to be helping.

I still don't understand why it is just the wheatens that are pasting up. So far about half of the wheatens have had the problem.

Don't be discouraged. I understand where you are coming from. I had a special needs daughter. She had a malignant brain tumor diagnosed at age 7, and she died at age 17. She was not in 4-H, but we raised chickens and she showed hers in open class. The day her Houdan hen won reserve champion large foul was one of the happiest days of her life. She got so much satisfaction out of her chickens, even if she wasn't able to take care of them the way other kids could. Gathering eggs was like an Easter egg hunt for her every day, and she delighted in every egg she found, especially if it was from a new pen or pullet.

Do whatever you need to do to help her be successful in her endeavors. I'm sure there are some that can be found. Now, honestly, I am in tears thinking about my daughter, and how happy she was with her winning chickens.

I have a special needs daughter too, but the point of showing in 4-H is to raise a quality bird and put the time into it. It's about the journey, even with a special needs child.

There is no such thing as a show quality egg and only a very few chicks that hatch (1 in 30) will make it to be good enough to be a show bird. My point is that I did not believe someone would take out a fully mature show bird and sell it; I could be wrong.

As I stated, there are people listed on the breeders list at the ameraucana breeders club site that sell eggs, chicks and started birds that could be potential show quality.

The birds we have now I raised from day old chicks. They were hatchery stock, but I have lovingly taken care of them and was smart enough to figure out that one of our Wellies was up to standard - she won Reserve Champion on our 4H fair this past weekend.

THANK YOU to those who have taken the time to PM me about sources for eggs and chicks.

No flaming - keep it civil

SQ = Standard Quality.
When sellers use this acronym they are letting you know that the chickies they are selling are bred for the standard quality. If you go with a well known breeder you can get the quality you are looking for. Keep in mind there are hobbbist and breeders starting out that have good SQ stock. Check the feed back given by previous buyers.

Show birds represent the hard work and efforts of the breeders. The breeders flock are kept from their best lines so you can get the quality of their breeding efforts by the chicks they sell.

THank you, Ivywoods. I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. I know that you will understand when I say that my daughter's eyes simply lit up the sky to see her birds win this past weekend.

It irritates me no end to have people assume I'm looking for some easy path. I take the harder path every single day. I do so willingly because she teaches me so much.

I wish I could give you a hug. My heart breaks for your loss. I am glad to hear your daughter found joy in raising chickens! Thank you for sharing part of her story with us.
