Luke13:34 :
I do understand. I still remember my daughter standing outside the poultry barn, waiting for me to get there. As soon as she saw me she started waving and flipping both hands and jumping up and down. She couldn't wait to tell me. The win was a special moment for her. I also understand where pips is coming from, as I have been up against that, too, where people have gone out and bought show birds and then hauled them in to the show. It is a learning process and kids learn so much by taking care of animals, whether it's chickens or some other animal. It's a process.

OH! Another story... one time there were some folks that ordered a trio of best show quality birds from a well known judge. We saw them and liked them, so we ended up buying a young trio from him as well. The ones we got were not his best ones, but they were nice, too. The kids cared for them and raised them up to show. Wouldn't you know, we were showing against the other birds! My son's birds won because they were so much better cared for. The difference was obvious even to an untrained eye.
I'm hoping I can get more kids in this area started with poultry. That is one of my objectives with the birds I have.
Don't be discouraged. I understand where you are coming from. I had a special needs daughter. She had a malignant brain tumor diagnosed at age 7, and she died at age 17. She was not in 4-H, but we raised chickens and she showed hers in open class. The day her Houdan hen won reserve champion large foul was one of the happiest days of her life. She got so much satisfaction out of her chickens, even if she wasn't able to take care of them the way other kids could. Gathering eggs was like an Easter egg hunt for her every day, and she delighted in every egg she found, especially if it was from a new pen or pullet.
Do whatever you need to do to help her be successful in her endeavors. I'm sure there are some that can be found. Now, honestly, I am in tears thinking about my daughter, and how happy she was with her winning chickens.
THank you, Ivywoods. I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. I know that you will understand when I say that my daughter's eyes simply lit up the sky to see her birds win this past weekend.
It irritates me no end to have people assume I'm looking for some easy path. I take the harder path every single day. I do so willingly because she teaches me so much.
