Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Luke13:34 :

Don't be discouraged. I understand where you are coming from. I had a special needs daughter. She had a malignant brain tumor diagnosed at age 7, and she died at age 17. She was not in 4-H, but we raised chickens and she showed hers in open class. The day her Houdan hen won reserve champion large foul was one of the happiest days of her life. She got so much satisfaction out of her chickens, even if she wasn't able to take care of them the way other kids could. Gathering eggs was like an Easter egg hunt for her every day, and she delighted in every egg she found, especially if it was from a new pen or pullet.

Do whatever you need to do to help her be successful in her endeavors. I'm sure there are some that can be found. Now, honestly, I am in tears thinking about my daughter, and how happy she was with her winning chickens.

THank you, Ivywoods. I'm so sorry to hear about your daughter. I know that you will understand when I say that my daughter's eyes simply lit up the sky to see her birds win this past weekend.

It irritates me no end to have people assume I'm looking for some easy path. I take the harder path every single day. I do so willingly because she teaches me so much.

I do understand. I still remember my daughter standing outside the poultry barn, waiting for me to get there. As soon as she saw me she started waving and flipping both hands and jumping up and down. She couldn't wait to tell me. The win was a special moment for her. I also understand where pips is coming from, as I have been up against that, too, where people have gone out and bought show birds and then hauled them in to the show. It is a learning process and kids learn so much by taking care of animals, whether it's chickens or some other animal. It's a process.

Find the best ameraucanas you can find and go from there!

OH! Another story... one time there were some folks that ordered a trio of best show quality birds from a well known judge. We saw them and liked them, so we ended up buying a young trio from him as well. The ones we got were not his best ones, but they were nice, too. The kids cared for them and raised them up to show. Wouldn't you know, we were showing against the other birds! My son's birds won because they were so much better cared for. The difference was obvious even to an untrained eye.

I'm hoping I can get more kids in this area started with poultry. That is one of my objectives with the birds I have.

I have a special needs daughter too, but the point of showing in 4-H is to raise a quality bird and put the time into it. It's about the journey, even with a special needs child.

The birds we have now I raised from day old chicks. They were hatchery stock, but I have lovingly taken care of them and was smart enough to figure out that one of our Wellies was up to standard - she won Reserve Champion on our 4H fair this past weekend.

THANK YOU to those who have taken the time to PM me about sources for eggs and chicks.

Several times I have stated that there is a breeders list that you can look at to get some chicks, eggs or started birds. I have even tried to explain that my first response was that breeders don't generally sell their "show birds" and that there is no way to tell if a chick is going to be show quality or not and that you cannot tell if a bird is going to be show quality by the egg.

Obviously you know this information from your most recent posts, but your first post read as if you wanted to purchase a show bird.

I think your anger is misdirected.

Yes, there have been a couple people. There are a few posts here on this thread, but I couldn't tell you where. (good luck searching)

Maybe the person who bred it will come back.....

Quick Question. Someone on Craigslist has this rooster for sale as an Ameraucana Bantam. It don't really look like am Ameraucana to me though.
Is it Ameraucana?
