Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

My first Brown Red chick of the year hatched! She is drying in the bator right now. 1 out of 5 to hatch so far. I hope one or two more will hatch but I don't think they will. I have 2 due to hatch next monday and 7 eggs collected and ready to go in!

Good plan. I've said it before, and I will say it again- ALWAYS keep more than one roo if you plan on breeding.

Always try to keep two roosters that way you always have a backup! Murphy's Law

Heir and the spare!

I followed that rule and lost both of my Barnie roos to different issues over the winter. Now I'm keeping three lol. I think I'm going to create bachelor pad for all the back up roos from each breed I have. I've found that as long as their together as chicks I don't have any fighting.

I'm a little on edge with my Brown reds! I only have one rooster. This very thing happened to me with my buff projects! I wouldn't keep anymore than 3 though. Because you will start keeping more and more faults.

Thought I would post some cute pics of my two black ameraucana girls eating up the mosquito larvae. Good girlies!!! They are 7 months old, I hatched them myself. The bigger girl laid her first blue egg the other day

Here is the chick. This is the test hatch. The first 5 eggs they laid went in so I'm hoping fertility has improved. I have 7 eggs set back that they've laid.

PS don't mind the time/date stamp my camera thought two days ago it was Feb 2009 or something!

Question - I have some almost 3 week old Lav Ams and have noticed that a few of them are developing a narrow line of feathers down the center of the backs... Does this indicate anything gender wise?
Thanks!

How early does anyone dare sex Wheatens? I was told that when the back/shoulder feathers start coming in, the darker ones are boys and the blonde ones are girls. Mine are just 1 1/2 weeks old, and if that is true, then I have 9 of 11 that are boys! Tell me it ain't so!
(BTW, they are gorgeous chicks, and from John Blehm stock so should be SQ. Still, I did so want girls!!)
