Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Do you have pics of your own Wheaten Ameraucana cockerels or roos?

Actually...this is what you said...
I'd wait another week. The thing is, don't judge by the shoulder feathers unless the WING feathers match them! Boys will have dark, almost entirely black (or blue) wing feathers, the shoulder feathers just help to confirm, especially if you have a male with too little black on the wings, which confuses people into thinking it is a girl - The shoulder feathers help aid the sexing.

Sometimes even the shoulder feathers can be misleading. I have one cockerel that was an "it's Pat" for the longest time. The comb was the best indicator for sexing after the first month...wide, 3 detailed, perfect rows of peas, and started to redden.

I don't even bother trying to sex the wheatens til they are about 4 weeks. It just became terribly obvious that I have 2 boys for every girl from the Meredith hatches. Like I needed that!

I have a repeat-offender broody faverolle that has been setting on some turkey eggs. She finally hopped off this morning after about 3 days to get a drink and one of the wheatens got in her nest. A whole bucket full of big warm turkery eggs was enough to make her spontaneously broody- no getting her out of there now. Poor Fav girl is wandering around looking for something to sit on. This is the same hen that kept sitting on my d'uccle hens like they were chicks a few weeks ago.

That would have been an awesome sight to see a Fav sitting on turkey eggs! Are you planning on letting your Wheaten brood up to hatch day? Take pics if you do! I had a silkie sitting on 2 goose eggs for me. I put them into my Brinsea 380 half way through incubation. I still wish to see how a Silkie hen would rear goslings!!!

Oh she's angry-but-not-biting broody. I love that. If the wheaten stays put til tomorrow I will give the fav some wheaten eggs and then they should both be due about the same time. I'm totally out of broody space- ugh!

You got your lav eggs from Amy too right? I have some 6 or 7 week old chicks I hatched from her eggs. I never noticed the feather line you speak off, but by 5 or 6 weeks I was pretty sure of the gender based on the comb. (At least I think I know!)

Larissa~ Yes, they came from Amy - I have six almost 3 week olds. What about the comb was it? Size? Color? Number of rows?
Thanks!

What Tyler said- 3 rows- boy- and it might be mroe pink. That might not show for another couple weeks though. Gotta have patience with these guys- I have been fooled more than once by late bloomers!
