Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Curious... I have six 7-week old Lav Ams and am still trying to determine sexes. I have noticed recently that on a couple their tail points up more than the others. Does this mean anything? Combs still aren't telling me anything definite yet. Thanks.

My birds are not bantams but I believe the climate here is probably pretty similar to his (John Blehm) (we aren't far apart) and I have some SERIOUS moulting going on. We've had a spectacularly tough winter and long, cold spring. Perhaps it has something to do with that?

Ameraucanas can be SO frustrating to sex! I have 2 Blue Ameraucanas that still have me totally on the fence at 6 weeks (although one is REALLY advertising pullet at this point). Their tails aren't helping me a bit.

Hey Jeanine! Here are some babies!

it could because we have been pretty unseasonable. They could still be on Michigan time in their heads (if that is possible) mine did their moult about a month ago but its been so hot they have really cut down on the eggs

I just obtained 5 Black Ameraucanas, 1 roo and 4 hens. Someone saw one of my pics of the roo and was questioning whether they are really Black Ams. The picture was a little washed out and it was very windy but I'll post it here with another one and let me know what you all think. The person I got them from had to give up her roos and some of her chickens because neighbors complained.

I am glad that you have written about this, as I am getting so frustrated with my 10 week-old Lavs from John Blehm (rec'vd as day-olds). One is clearly a boy--clearly pronounced, red comb and high tail carriage if that means anything), but the other LAV just started to show red on its comb, and only on the top half, and tail set a bit lower...?!? And now one of the two wheatens, which have been confirmed over and over again as pullets, has her comb turning red! I think it is a sign of maturation in the wheaton, but could that be the deal with the LAV?

Dawn, your Wheaties are girls... I guarantee it. Boys do not feather in that color at all.

Your Lavs on the other hand... well, I have no idea.

Some pictures from today.

My Wheaten cockerel from Paul Smith, he's around 3 months old now, no name yet.

I also have a Splash Wheaten from Paul, I've been calling this one Harold lately.

This Wheaten boy is from John Blehm, he's almost a month younger, hatched around the 20th of March.

This is Hoyt.

Any idea on who I should hold on to out of those young guys? I won't be rehoming anyone anytime soon but I just thought I'd ask if anyone sees any blatant faults that I might have looked past.

Aaand, my Blue Wheaten hen Judy hatched chicks almost 3 weeks ago now, the darker chicks are OEs and the paler ones are EEs.

ETA: I almost forgot! I hatched chicks from Wayne Meredith on Easter, too. This little guy was one of the only ones who wanted to hold still enough for a photo... they're entering the gangly dinosaur stage right now.
