Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Don't apologize for it. I think every thread has a 'deja vu' moment. Especially when it is important to the poster or newcomer. Noticing that hatcheries are starting to pay attention means that all the hard work of true Ameraucana breeders is starting to pay off. Comparing Ameraucanas, 'Americanas', Araucanas and EE's are they way people learn.

I'm sorry I started the discussion then. I'm actually very surprised that spreading recognition and clarification of the breed is such a banal topic (I'm really not being sarcastic, I'm really very surprised). It wasn't intended to start a debate about EEs (nobody said they people shouldn't buy them, I have no idea where that came from). I only considered them vaguely related to the topic in that they're being distinguished by the mainstream from Ameraucanas now. Which I consider to be a major victory.

I have an abiding respect for the breed, and for the people who have fought for so long to establish and distinguish them. That's why I was excited and wanted to share about the breed gaining more respect. It was not intended to 'stir the pot', or cause a re-run of the discussion. I apologize that that is what happened.

It's the fact that it's discussed just about every 10 pages. My reply was not because of you, just some of the 'regulars' like to feed into the conversation. It's like they have to escalate it into something it doesn't need to be. A simple answer and moving on would be suffice.

This my americana hen Milkyway. I wish i had a better picture of her but thats the only one i have right now. Im not sure why but she hasnt layed any eggs and she is about 8 months old. I showed her in my county 4h fair this year. She got champion and resevere showmanship. Then i took her to state fair and she got first. until the day of my show at the state fair i thought that she was an aracana because thats what some people told me. It was kind of funny at the time. And then i took her to a show in lebeanon and she got best variety in her class.

Given the time of year you should totally NOT be surprised at her not laying yet. I have a FBCM hen that just started laying at 31 weeks. Give it a little longer. Congrats on your wins!

I had an Easter Egger Like yours that started to lay at about 10... it is the time of year she is starting to lay.... the light effects them and without enough light they will not start laying or it will be very delayed. You might want to join us on the EE thread

Soo...I have not read this entire thread, but I have a question that perhaps you can answer for me, and has probably been asked and answered before. Do ameracaunas, in general, have a similar disposition to EE's? I have two EE's that are super friendly, and it seems that is the general rule for them. I am interested in breeding toward an sop, and am researching breeds. Since the red headed step child of the ameracauna seem so sweet, I am hoping the "real" thing is also. I know this is a sensitive topic on this thread, so please understand that I am sincerely curious and felt that the breeders and owners of ameracauna would be the best people to ask (I started on the EE thread, but, this makes more sense even if I am a bit intimidated).

Like any breed its both nature, and nurture that decide how a chicken will act. If you buy chicks you can do things like giving treats etc. to make them friendlier. I have had all kinds of personalities with my birds. I have black, blue, and splash. I have some that my daughter can walk up to, they will lay on the ground for her to pick them up. I have others that if you get within 20 feet they start to run. I really like the roosters. I have not had a mean one yet. Some varieties are know for bluer eggs, calmer personalities, but I am not sure which is which. Hopefully someone will be able to help with that, Good Luck!!!

I have never had an aggressive Ameraucana. I have a young roo that is a little...... TENSE LOL but he is not the attaching type. All my girls are easy going and will let me pick them up pretty easy. If they are in the coop they stay right there while we work. Like the other post all birds are different...... ( I think my Ams are nicer than my EE )
