Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I recently was given a rooster and 4 hens, and was told the three whitish hens are Blue Wheaton Ameruacanas, and the rooster is a Blue Wheaton Ameraucana Splash (I know this isn't an excepted color) I was told The roo is a true Ameraucana and has a purebred mother and father, and that he and the hens produce show quality offspring.
If someone gives you a non-standard bird, then says that they will have show quality offspring, is not exactly right. Although I hope that you get SQ offspring.

They are lovely and sweet, which is what I like best. The Roo is a true gentleman, and sweet as can be with young children and all humans that come into our yard. Even if they aren't SQ, I think I won the chicken lottery!!

Hey Guys!

I recently was given a rooster and 4 hens, and was told the three whitish hens are Blue Wheaton Ameruacanas, and the rooster is a Blue Wheaton Ameraucana Splash (I know this isn't an excepted color) I was told The roo is a true Ameraucana and has a purebred mother and father, and that he and the hens should produce show quality offspring. I was wondering if you could comment on their coloring and if they adhere to the standard? The brown hen in the 2nd picture lays an olive green egg, so I assume she is a EE.

The bottom egg is the color I'm getting from the blue wheaton hens.
The females are all easter eggers. The cockerel could be a splash wheaten, but if he came from the same place as the females then I would doubt it.

Anyone want to give me their opinion on this 2012 pullet? I know not best pic but the Amers seem to be the only breed I cannot get ever halfway decend pics of.......... Out of all the birds I raised last year she is the nicest in my opinion.

OK so I am debating about keeping my blue wheaten cockerel. He is about nine and a half months old now. The picture does not show his color well. What do you think of his shape? Any critique would be greatly appreciated. He does have some striping in his hackles and a few red feathers on his chest.

What is his weight? He looks small in the picture, but that can be deceiving.

I don't like the way he is standing, because it makes him look very compact. But I think he looks pretty good.

If you could get a closer picture with his head and neck a bit more forward you could get a better idea of his overall body shape.

I do not think he is small. I have not weighed him, but he was the biggest boy I hatched. Pictures can be deceiving I was worried he might be to lanky. I will try and get a better pic up and see about weighing him.

Thank you for taking a look at him. I just got a few Ameraucana hatching eggs to try them out. I am falling in love with their personalities. I also really like my boys crow. It sounds very different from my other boys.

I'm wondering about the single beard gene I've seen discussed here. Will these birds possibly be beardless or have small beards? What age would you know if your birds beards are not going to fill out? My older birds have huge beards and muffs while some that I hatched from a different breeder have muffs but just a little scruff for a beard. They're about 4 months now and I'm hoping they will fill in a lot more.

Did you hatch them from my eggs?
Seems Dorian, my roo, has a single beard gene. I never knew because since I had him, he never had one - girls kept him picked clean. The pics I saw of him before I bought him were when he was young and not fully developed. At least one, maybe all of his hatch mates also had a single beard gene. I did not realize it until a picture of their 3 month old pullets was commented on awhile ago. I kept an eye on them more closely this time around. I have hatched 4 beardless chickens so far. This last batch three of four of the chicks hatched were beardless. I kept all my single beard girls and I am now looking for a new rooster to cover them. I will then start weeding out my single bearded girls. I am very upset about this because although Kat says she breeds for egg color and not showing, this put me back 2yrs in my breeding plans. I have 20 wheaten chicks (not 15 now) ordered from Paul Smith in hopes of a future SQ rooster or 3 being in that order of chicks. He says his egg color is lacking, so hopefully Kat's egg color fixes his and his type fixes Kat's.

As for your question, I knew at 6 months. They are nearly a year old and I know I only have 2 girls with double beard genes. When they were hatched, I thought they looked like regular chicks. The chick I hatched from WhiteMountainsRanch's eggs had a very fluffy face in comparison. I wondered then.

Live and learn.
