Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

True but they have the genders backwards on the chicks. Chick 1 is a pullet chick 2 is a cockerel.
Larps1234 is trying to say they are the opposite because of features, not colors. Chicksnthestiks is saying we are saying they are Pullet #1 and Cockerel #2 based on color because wheatens can be sexed by color. ;)

I am sitting here tonight watching my babies hatch. There are three out of their shells already and all others are piped . We have two amercannas andone new J.Bantan.

At this point I would guess they are pullets but I really need to see their combs ,now listen to this stage twoer who knows nothing really. Me. Please the only thing I canreally say is that if they lay eggs in the future they are hens . Right now they are just Beautiful to me.

Yay! The first one, is darker than the other... been thinking it was a Wheaten, and the second one a Blue Wheaten, but I can't believe my luck that I bought 2 unsexed chicks and both turned out to be pullets

. They haven't turned BLACK like my Blue Wheaten rooster "Simon" did at that age!

Miranda, I'm almost positive you have two pullets there. I think Jerry was right in the first place. I say "almost" because they are about a week to two weeks away from me being sure. The first in undoubtedly a pullet. The second one has a few dark places where I'm wondering if it may turn out to be a Wheaten or Blue Wheaten cockerel. It's hard to tell for certain from the pics but I still think the odds are it's a pullet.

Keep this post as a good lesson and future reference. Note that Jerry - a long time breeder of Ameraucanas - was first to reply and then many others followed it totally opposite opinions. When you get replies, it would do you well to always take the information in conjunction with how much experience they have. One thing about BYC is that it is an open forum and everyone and anyone can pipe in on a subject whether or not they have any expertise on the subject or experience with the topic of hand.

If you look at my signature, you'll see the WBS Ameraucanas is the only variety I breed and show. So you can take what I say with that in mind.

God Bless,

My white Ameraucana had their first chance to free range yesterday. They are so sweet and very people friendly.

I am still thinking (hoping) they are all pullets!

Neither one of those birds are Wheaten Ameraucanas.
I know. i was just giving an example.

first picture is a cockerel, last picture is a hen. last one is a hen because chest sticks out roundish out like a hens chest.

i have used this method with chicks that age with no false positives.

these are NOT my pictures! her are examples:

I am saying to Larps1234 they can be sexed by color because that much I know. I would not venture to guess which sex is which because I have never had wheatens and I think people should listen to the people who have bred them, been around awhile and know what they are talking about.

Oh my, they are so pretty! Here I have been thinking that I don't want any white birds. I have three W/BW chicks right now. Two boys and a girl. I seem to have a lot of boys this year

Now I need to find some girls.
