Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Here is a black ameraucana cockerel that I am not found of. He is mean and I just dont like how he looks. But I thought I would ask you guys what you thought of him, before getting rid of him.

to me he just looks awkward. I know he has a little growing left to do.
he has a squirrel tail. This is where the tail sits at a 90 degree angle or higher. Its a DQ. I would cull him, especially if he's mean.

you will increase your odds if you make some contacts as I mentioned, many breeders do keep in touch with other breeders and might be able to lead you to someone that will be at that or some other specific show

you could also contact the regional club rep and present your idea/desires

thank you for the ideas i will send some emails out

Thsnk you for the info. i knew something about him just didnt look right. He also has really long legs and i think it mskes him look like road runner.

Excuse the horrible cropping job on this, it's the only one I could find of the two of them together and I tried to get all the photo bombers out of it, I need to get better pictures :p These were sold to me as Ameraucana hatching eggs but I'm not entirely sure that's what I got. They have the nice muffs (They're May babies so still a lot of growing to do) and the white one has an excellent comb but I think his feet are the wrong color. Also ignore the icky looking run

it had just dumped several inches of rain on us and I had to dig all the sand out and replace it :/ not fun..... So do I really have ameraucanas or did I get duped?

That white one looks a lot like the EEs I had that were a quarter silkie with that slight rise in the head feathers and the small wattles.

They are both Easter Eggers. The black girl has yellow skin on her legs.

I wouldn't call it squirrell tail. It's wry tail if anything, just looks like a bad angle in the pics to me. That's acceptable with cockerels, but a dq for a cock bird. Anyways, I'm splitting hairs here. I would cull him. his tail carriage and lack of structure alone would merit culling, let alone a bad temper;)

What's acceptable in cockerels but a DQ in a cock bird? The wry tail? Why is it okay in young birds?

This is just my opinion and my observation not only for this breed, but many others as well. I am sure someone will give more information that is breed specific and I would like to know that information also.

They are growing tail feathers and saddle feathers.... one side can sometimes have a heavier weight of feathers. it gives the experience of wry tail when it is not. When they body mature and the feathers mature they can support the feathers the way they are supposed to. The appearance of wry tail goes away. I have a few cockerels that some days they look wry tail and other days they do not. They are different breeds including AM's.

Okay I'm going to throw this out there. I'm looking from Wheaten AM hatching eggs from show stock or good breeder quality. I have never seen any showing at Ohio National Poultry show only a Black AM which I questioned due to the fact it laid a nice green egg before judging. But it won since no one else had any. So if anyone has any for sell let me know. Thank you Michele
This farm is in Southern WV and has Wheaten AM hatching eggs. Not sure if she ships them or not and/or how well the chickens are doing this late in the season. I think I'm linking to the big stock chicken picture page so you can see her chickens
