Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Question for serious breeders:

In my experience with wheaten old english game bantams, it was always best to have a male and female line. Has anyone tried this with Ameraucanas? If not, why? I have been talking with another breeder and brought this up..... Just wanted to know if anyone has had success with it.

I notice a lot of black shafting in male hackles, and too much wheat stippling in female tails with washed out or uneven wheat throughout the body..... I think this may be fixed by isolating the problems and focusing specifically on male and female lines.

Question for Jean (pips and peeps) you still breeding Wheaten AM's. I would love to get into breeding these beauties, I will have to get pic's of the pullets I have right now. To see if they are show worthy, if so I just may show them this year in November at Ohio National Poultry show. So far I've only shown my d'Uccles

There has always been problems with the striping in the hackles of wheaten ameraucana males. I do not know what they original breeders used to make them, but it is a huge problem.

On the females, they are supposed to be lighter than the wheaten OE.

I am still breeding wheaten and blue wheaten. I haven't been selling very much from here, so it would be highly unlikely that I start now.

Hi I have a question could someone tell me at what age Ameraucanas start laying. I have some that are 24 weeks and was wondering when they might start laying. Thanks

Okay I'm going to throw this out there. I'm looking from Wheaten AM hatching eggs from show stock or good breeder quality. I have never seen any showing at Ohio National Poultry show only a Black AM which I questioned due to the fact it laid a nice green egg before judging. But it won since no one else had any. So if anyone has any for sell let me know. Thank you Michele

Just a suggestion, you won't find many breeders selling eggs this time of year (breeding pens broken up for many reasons)

What you will find is breeders that have birds they will part with, get on the club website and do some digging on the breeder list, make some calls, send some emails. Many will bring birds for sale to shows they will be attending this time of year. Save shipping and get to meet those that know the most about the lineage, get some input that is invaluable.

you will increase your odds if you make some contacts as I mentioned, many breeders do keep in touch with other breeders and might be able to lead you to someone that will be at that or some other specific show

you could also contact the regional club rep and present your idea/desires
