Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Weird that's it's not crowing. I would say its an iffy & wait a little longer.
The tail feathers look like they are beginning to hook downward.
nd the hackle feathers around the neck look pointed like a rooster I stead of round like finger tips like a hens.
But my late bloomer started crowing around 24 wks.
I would give it more time.

There is no doubt that it is a rooster. Not every rooster is loud and contanstly crowing.

I have a wheaten rooster that didn't even try to crow until he was almost 10 months old.

Great pics of all 3 together!
Um, yeah, the red in the wings is one of the signs, in addition to the regular feathering clues. Easter Egger male, no doubt. I got all three of my BBS Ameraucanas in one photo today. Gypsy, the black, is 6 years old now, and Nora, the blue, and Snow, the splash, are 5 1/2, so they all are back together again, having been retired to the same rooster-free coop (other than the two 10 week old cockerels who are temporarily bunking with them, but who are scared featherless of them, lol).

the red coloring on the wings is a sure sign it is a roo no doubt about it. pullets can't have that kind of coloring.

I wouldn't mind it being a Roo except we are not allowed to have them in this area. Would be really cool if it turned out to be a non-crowing Roo (yeah...like that is going to happen...). I picked this chick out at the feed store because it was mostly gray and I love blue or gray coloring. Since it is being quiet at this point (and actually seems intimidated by the hens/pullets) I will wait it out until am 100% sure. I had an EE last year that I was convinced was a Roo because of the posture, long legs and general "look" but it turned out to be a hen and only laid plain old light brown eggs. That one did not have the longer feathers in the tail though.....

I also looked at the EE Braggers thread (thanks "CCCCCCCCHICKENS") and do see a number of similar looking birds that are Roos. I am afraid I am setting myself up for disappointment.

Thanks for all the input! I will try to remember to update here when I am sure....
