Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

The red will not show on females. That is autosomal red leaking through. Hard to eliminate sometimes. I have noticed it showing up on splash more than blue or black. Not sure why. Myself I would not breed from them. I consider a splash without leakage to be a excellent choice when trying to eliminate this from BBS.

I hatched 2 black Ameraucanas from a local purebred breeder (def not EE in other words) and lucky me I got one pullet and one cockerel. I noticed today that the cockerel has what look like 3 copper circles on each shoulder. Has anyone seen this before? Will it go away or get worse as he ages? He is about 3 months if I remember right. Thanks :) ~Melissa

This is the same problem as the splash had in above post.It will not go away. Females carry this undetected. Since your male has a mild case you may get some clean cockerels from him but I would not bet on it. A better male is your best bet.

Ah, thanks for that. In that case he will be spending time with my Penedesencas, Marans and White Leghorns :)

Just a question for those of you who have had Ameraucanas for a while. I purchase Wheaten Ameraucana eggs that were a beautiful light blue and hatched them and got 6 pullets. One pullet just started laying, finally...question is this first eggs is not blue at all it is very green. Will they lighten up to be blue after a few are laid or have I a problem with my pure Wheaten Ameraucana.

This picture does not even show how dark green the egg really is.

Jerry,

You are always a wealth of knowledge. I have a really nice black rooster that has leakage. He has great type, eye color, nice beetle green and MOST importantly great size. He is 8lbs 3 ounces. I am trying to get some clean males from him but seem to wind up with mostly pullets when I hatch eggs. I have one cockerel from him that has 1 gold dot on his shoulder but am not planning on using him as his dad started out that way but it really expanded on the 2nd adult molt. I've never considered breeding for splash out of him but might try it and see I can get some clean cockerels... worth a try while growing out some blues and blacks. Thanks as always for your thoughts.

you blue looks like light blue mottled (not an actual color, well maybe a color project, I was just describing it). She is beautiful. Very interesting color to her

My wheatans just started laying in December. They were tiny and pale now they are medium size and bluer. My blue wheatans eggs started out like the upper right two in pic. Now they're evened out :)
