Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

"rich blue TO olive green" would be an Easter egger or olive egger wouldn't it? (here maran x ameracauna crosses often lay deep olive colors) many people buy EE as ameraucana from hatcheries, start breeding and continue to call them ameraucana, unaware they are EEs, because they themselves paid good money for what they thought was ameraucana. Check bottoms of there feet. Yellow would indicate an EE. White an ameraucana.
K I know the dude I bought mine from sead that they can lay eggs varying from Rich Light Blue to Olive Green & that just because they lay a green dose not meen that they are no-longer a "pure" Ameraucana just that they have been bread Further from the organelle line & that in 2-3 more generation of being bread back to a Pure Blue egg hatched Roo it will more than likely go back to the Rich Light Blue you are looking for.
SO I Don't think you do. but don't go off of my input alone :) , Hope this Hleps, BoodieHen2012

Jerry,

You are always a wealth of knowledge. I have a really nice black rooster that has leakage. He has great type, eye color, nice beetle green and MOST importantly great size. He is 8lbs 3 ounces. I am trying to get some clean males from him but seem to wind up with mostly pullets when I hatch eggs. I have one cockerel from him that has 1 gold dot on his shoulder but am not planning on using him as his dad started out that way but it really expanded on the 2nd adult molt. I've never considered breeding for splash out of him but might try it and see I can get some clean cockerels... worth a try while growing out some blues and blacks. Thanks as always for your thoughts.

Thanks. What I was trying to say is splash shows leakage more easily. Leakage that may not show on a blue or black will show on a splash. A splash rooster in my opinion is a excellent breeder. In your case I would try a splash hen from a good line. I understand wanting to keep the weight up. 8lbs plus is very good.

my husband purchased a dozen blue wheaten eggs for me to incubate. I won't get them until sometime in February or March but I am very excited. Any one have any tips on incubation of the eggs? I have successfully incubated rhode island reds mixed with rocks. Is there anything different when incubating blue wheatens? We are using a hovabator incubator with auto egg turner.

your blue looks like light blue mottled (not an actual color, well maybe a color project, I was just describing it). She is beautiful. Very interesting color to her

Just a question for those of you who have had Ameraucanas for a while. I purchase Wheaten Ameraucana eggs that were a beautiful light blue and hatched them and got 6 pullets. One pullet just started laying, finally...question is this first eggs is not blue at all it is very green. Will they lighten up to be blue after a few are laid or have I a problem with my pure Wheaten Ameraucana.

This picture does not even show how dark green the egg really is.
Might be an OE. That is a lot of green.....Not sure if a AM can lay that green....I do have some of my AM's have a slight green cast when they start to lay..after a few months it is hard to see any green.

If you have had good success with hatching shipping eggs before...do that same thing.
Having a great success with shipped eggs takes many variables.humidity..healthy and age of hens laying..how long the PO tosses the box around..the weather during transport. How the eggs are handled after you open the box...etc.
If you have not hatched shipped eggs..drop me a pm and I can give you a few pointers too..

I've been working on some blues with him and have been trying to get some blue cockerels to use. (egg size from one of my blue hens is exceptional and I want to perpetuate this - bird size and egg size in from this cross has been great so far) I wasn't considering growing out any splash cockerels but your idea sounds great so I will keep some from future generations and see what happens.

K Hi I originally bought my 1st 4 True Ameraucana's in May of last year aka 2013

She is very pretty but not an Ameraucana.... her legs are the wrong color and TECHNICALLY all project Ams are EE till accepted. I would like a whole flock like her.

Yes the mottled gene causes leg color issues but I have seen pictures of some with slate legs. Progress is being made. Very nice bird.

Nothing special, they're just really hard to candle. Their shell is different, can't see through it well. Good luck!
