Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

To try and put this issue in perspective look at other hatchery breeds. They also have the same problem. A hatchery Wyandotte,leghorn,rhode island red and others do not meet the breed standard. While they may do ok in 4H they are not show stock. I hunt with beagles and same problem in this breed. A field bred beagle is seldom a show candidate and a show bred beagle is seldom a good hunter. A gundog bred beagle is seldom suitable for show and in many cases not field trail quality either. So Ameraucanas are not alone.

What color variety tends to be the most productive and largest? I really want to develop more substance to my project Lavenders so that they are more of a dual-purpose birds.

You shouldn't breed anything but blacks with your Lavenders.... you are asking for some trouble down the road it you introduce anything else.

I was just asking in general, not specifically improvement of the Lavenders. Like, I have heard the Wheatens tend to lay more robin's egg blue eggs, etc. and was wondering what variety would be considered the most productive.

It really depends on the bloodline more than the color variety. Each breeder has their own goals and priority. Myself I value utility. This is after all a dual purpose breed. A good show bird will have size so no problem there. Egg laying can and does vary a lot. Myself I try to improve egg laying. The white variety is the easiest to improve laying through diversity followed by lavender. This is only my opinion based on personal experience. White can cover any color. Lavender can hide some sins of the blacks. That is to say a black leaking silver is obvious but a good lavender male can look silvery with no genetic fault. So silver leakage can be missed by some. In my experience my white bantams are my best layers.

Thank you. I really do want to produce a good dual purpose breed, as I know that originally Ameraucana's were developed with that idea in mind. My project Lavender pullets have been the most inconsistent layers of any of the breeds I currently have.

i found the recent discussion about EE and amerauana very interesting. with experts leaving and what not. There's always an option to block people. Its very simple and you will never see their posts ever again. If you block them once every post they make will not clog up the threads you look at. also I don't know if it's possible but if this thread used the word AM's instead of Ameraucana allot of the newbies wouldnt use this thread. Only the people educated on ameraucana who actually have Am's and learned about Ams would come post on the thread. The newbies searching ameraucana would use other threads

I guess I'm not an "educated person". If I saw a threa titled Ams I'd have no idea what it was about.
