Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I don't plan on breeding to sell. I just have them for eggs. And I may have to get rid of my roo soon; as one of my neighbors is complaining and posting signs on the mailbox about noise ordinances and such. We are allowed chickens. Roosters if we have 20,000 sq ft. I have about 15,000 sq ft. So if the county comes knocking, i have to give up my man.

There is an ant--crowing collar. It reduces the force that a roo can put into his crow. I haven't used it but I saw a video on the difference it makes. It at least halves the volume.

Here is their link on Facebook; https://www.facebook.com/RoosterCollars

Unlike you, I love the splash color--it reminds me of the blue merle Collies and Shelties I showed many decades ago.

I am involved in two breeds, Ameraucanas and bantam Cochins, both in the bbs colors. Cochins are about to have Splash recognized as a variety at the end of this year. I have yet to have anyone tell me what is the "correct" color for splash. The SOP talks of splash being white, but that doesn't seem to be the color produced.

The only breed I can think of where a splash is already accepted is a silkie. So somewhere there is a SOP description of splash. It might not of made it into the current SOP's that are available. The reason you can't find anyone to tell you what the correct color is for a splash is probably because nobody knows?!?

You should be able to get the color standard from the Cochin Club. They have to have that to get the birds recognized.

There is a description of splash silkies on page 309 of the current standard of perfection.

The splash modern game bantam was accepted in 2011 and is not yet in the book.

Even the standard's explanation of "splash" is widely open to interpretation other than the part about no rust allowed in it. It is extremely subjective as to what constitutes "Slaty blue and white that has a faint bluish gray tinge. Blue in the feathers in the form of large irregular shaped blobs...." That is from a breeder's website, not the actual standard, so I'm not sure of the exact wording. Many breeders have the standard on their website and/or blog. The term "slaty" would be something interpreted slightly different from person to person. And how much blue and how much white? My splashes are mostly pearly white with some ghosty grayish blue splashes here and there, but not many. So, even with a description of splash, it still isn't something you can pin down to something exact like you may a solid color or a color combination, as with a rooster's body plumage plus the saddle/hackle color.

Is this what you are looking for in a splash color? The Ameraucanas are a bit bleached from the sun.

Love this roo! I am hoping to get a splash cockerel out of my P. Smith chicks. I tend to like the blues and splash the most, but that is from pictures so I will have to wait a while and see where I go with them. I have black, blue, splash, lavender and blue wheaten. They are now two weeks old.

He was a Paul Smith bird, as is the splash hen pictured.

A few weeks ago I posted about the Ameraucana eggs I set, in my Brinsea Mini Advanced. They were not due to hatch until Friday but last night before I went to bed three had pips in them. Well, this morning I woke up to one cute little ball of fluff. This little one is so fiesty and talkative. I think it wants a sibling to play with.

I'll keep you all posted as they hatch. :)
