Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Quote: </p I use just the chick size waterers and the hen does fine. Quail does look a bit small. The problem with the small waterers is they can be easily knocked over by mom. I suggest using a glass mason jar screwed to the bottom of the waterer instead of the plastic top it comes with. It will give added weight and help keep it from being easily tipped. Another option is use the larger waterer if the chicks can reach it but put marbles or large aquarium rocks in the bottom dish. Mom can still drink and chicks won't drown because of the marbles or rocks. I would be shocked if mom molts while raising chicks. Those feathers keep chicks warm! She will likely molt sometime after she is through with them or maybe in the fall. I have three molting now, but others are not. I've seen some molt early and others molt in late summer or early fall. Btw, watch mom carefully when chicks reach about six weeks old. If she is penned up with them she will start displaying more aggressive behavior with them. That's your cue to let her out, she is done with them.

OK a funny question I"m sure. I don't have my SOP yet, probably will have to wait till end of summer but the last time I looked up breed standards I don't recall there being anything about toenail color. I have a beautiful blue pullet with nice lacing but her middle two toenails are white, the outer toenails are dark/slate/black. Comments?

I don't think it is an issue. I have heard it is not mentioned in the SOP.

Thanks; I just wanted to make sure it wasn't some DQ I hadn't heard of yet!
The toes might fill in over time. Many of the Ameraucanas I have started with white toes.

Question: One of my blue chicks has a white beak and a lot of white on the face. Is the beak color within the normal range? The breeding is splash to blue. I'm used to a dark beak like in the bottom picture, but I haven't raised many chicks.

I have to say, it sure is fun to watch a hen raise her chicks. It is so cute to see her call them over and break up food for them. She'll present food, peck at it, get them interested and then step back. These are the first chicks she has hatched and I am so surprised that she just knows what to do. I can understand the instinct to protect and respond to any cries of distress, but to pick food up, break it into small pieces? I've watched lots of clutzy mammal mothers who were pretty stupid about being mothers--I just didn't imagine she would be so wise about mothering right from the get go. I just thought they would have to figure out feeding and water on their own and her job was simply to keep them warm and safe.

I love my Black/Lav split roo. His name is Clark. I'm a complete neophyte and know nothing about chicken conformation. How does Clark rate to the experts in here?

Thanks!
