I suggest using a glass mason jar screwed to the bottom of the waterer instead of the plastic top it comes with. It will give added weight and help keep it from being easily tipped. Another option is use the larger waterer if the chicks can reach it but put marbles or large aquarium rocks in the bottom dish. Mom can still drink and chicks won't drown because of the marbles or rocks. I would be shocked if mom molts while raising chicks. Those feathers keep chicks warm! She will likely molt sometime after she is through with them or maybe in the fall. I have three molting now, but others are not. I've seen some molt early and others molt in late summer or early fall. Btw, watch mom carefully when chicks reach about six weeks old. If she is penned up with them she will start displaying more aggressive behavior with them. That's your cue to let her out, she is done with them.
