Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Back in the spring, I hatched some of peachick's Wheaton Ameraucana eggs. I got 4 lovely chicks, and until today I assumed I had 3 pullets and 1 cockerel, based on coloring and size. One is significantly darker and bigger than the others. But today, in the soaking rain, 2 of my "pullets" look like they have pointy saddle feathers? Is it just because they're wet? I'm new to this color, so I'm really not sure what I'm looking for. What do you guys think? They're 4 months old...

Hey I actually lived in Knoxville all of last year, great scenery!

Blacks are a personal preference of course, but blues lack good lacing in ameraucanas so that's always a constant challenge, and splashes are nice to look at and I'm sure they are good for some breeding purposes if you are breeding BBS, but since I wouldn't breed blues then splashes just take up extra space. Black/whites would be my preference on breeding just for the less hassle of worrying about color, I mean you have to already worry about body type, egg color/production, and other traits. One less trait to have to work at helps out in my books. Though I guess black or white might look too plain for someone else, I think they look elegant :p

With all that being said... I sold/gave away all my blacks, one white, and wheaten/ BW and lavenders last year before I moved to Knoxville. Now that I've gotten back in the game, I have wheatens and lavenders living together because I don't want to breed chickens I just want pretty ones to look at :) BTW I would never get serious about trying to breed wheatens again due to all the hassle they are!
I may turn out the same way. I am thinking about building a chicken house that is a quad and has separate runs. I could raise BBS, Wheatens, and Silvers and have a 4th place for babies. The question is do I really want to do that since I also like to travel. I also like the Silver hens, but not necessarily the roosters. I may wind up with just all hens as well.

I lived in Memphis for many years until I retired 7 years ago. Now, I live about half way between Knoxville and Asheville, NC in the mountains where my husband was born.

I'm thinking you still have 1 roo and 3 pullets. I'm always an optimist, though!

Yes, Only one is a roo.

Here is a picture of a splash Ameraucana pullet my little broody Silkie hatched for me about two months old. She is a lot lighter than the pictures suggest--she is almost snow white with pale splashes. It is very pretty. Her legs are not really slate--they are almost blue. Their blueness doesn't show in the picture, probably because they picked up the yellow tones from the camera flash and the floor.

What color is considered "ideal" for splash? Since splash is a white, I wonder if the lighter color is more correct? What breeds allow splash varieties? I want to look up the description of splash in the SOP for a breeds that recognize the color.

Is this a Ameraucana??

It's name is Chipmonk not sure if it is a Roo or a Pullet. It is Two weeks old in this pic.
I'm thinking a roo because of no tail feathers. This is an unscientific method that some believe in. I am still awaiting the outcome on mine. I correctly identified three blues, a blue wheaten and a lavender. Still waiting to find the black and wondering if I may have a couple more. Time will tell.
