Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

FYI eggs are a real gamble . I buy some and also sell some . You can find someone to sell some about anytime . That is not to say you should buy then . Cold or hot weather can ruin your chances of a good hatch . Good can range from 2- 6 out of a dozen eggs . If you are incubating for the first time do not buy shipped eggs . You must learn to operate your incubator first on your own eggs or locally purchased eggs . If you are using one of the Styrofoam incubators there is a learning process to get good hatches .

I pegged hatching eggs at about 50% hatch rate, but hadn't factored in weather. I do have a styrofoam incubator, a genesis hovabator from a friend who is a Maran and Silkie breeder. Now you have me thinking I may try a hatch of Marans (I can get fertile eggs free) this fall, then order the Ameraucanas in the spring. I do have the upper hand in having a breeder friend who has been using these brand incubators for hundreds of hatches. She can teach me all I need to know. :)

Okay so it sounds like it'd be best to wait until spring to start my flock. It seems like most breeders are more willing to sell hatching eggs than chicks. I've been kind of leaning towards hatching eggs since I've got an incubator, and I want to start fairly small (4-6 hens, one roo, per color). Do eggs typically ship sooner, or later than chicks (based on weather)?
Be careful where you buy them. There have been some folks that have gotten EE eggs sold as Ameraucana from a certain EBayer. There is a for sell forum on BYC and I have seen a couple of our posters selling. When you get ready, ask here for reputable breeders. I am waiting for the girls of my first flock to lay. I figure at the earliest I have another month to go.

Here is a picture of Pearl. I'm not sure what sex Pearl is yet, almost positive it's a roo. A picture of a white Ameraucana is on the Ameraucana thread and Pearl looks identical to it. I'm going to post a picture and you can tell me what it is A or EE. I know you said an A doesn't have green legs. Any chance the legs can change color? New to this and just want to ask about it.

Pearl hasn't crowed yet. He is 20 weeks old today, or whatever the case may be. I have seen him go after the girls (mate) more than once but anyway just wonder like I say. What is he or she, A or EE

Cpartist on here has a very nice flock of wheaten and sells hatching eggs. I have seen her birds and they are very nice. She has a very good eye for breeding, and a great reputation for her shipping eggs hatch rate...
