Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I sold a Rooster to a fella in Tx. It was 3 months until weather here. & there was good enough. He patiently waited and lived with texted photos of. "His" boy growing up.
In the end his patience was rewarded with a great bird that arrived safely.

I have a question... I have a line of BBS ameraucana whose rooster combs flop over to the side. Is that something I can fix by bringing in other lines, and if so, is it easy to fix? I'm assuming that is not a desireable trait... Thanks in advance for any input.

As a small pea comb is what is called for, I'd say anything big enough to flop is undesirable. Comb size and shape can be bred for. How easy? Like all other traits depends on your definition of "easy".

It can be fixed as it is genetic . Myself I would start over with better birds . Depending on how severe the problem is . A mild case is easier to fix than a severe case . Basically you are trying to make sure the pea comb is tight against the head where it attaches to the skull .

If I breed a blue wheaten roo to blue hens, what colors can I expect and would the offspring just be considered EEs?

Yes they will be EE's.
If wheaten cock;
The left side will be blue.
The right side will be Wheaten.
With white stripes in hackles and pink Tail.
If blue cock, eggzactry opposite that.
Lol

Okay so it sounds like it'd be best to wait until spring to start my flock. It seems like most breeders are more willing to sell hatching eggs than chicks. I've been kind of leaning towards hatching eggs since I've got an incubator, and I want to start fairly small (4-6 hens, one roo, per color). Do eggs typically ship sooner, or later than chicks (based on weather)?

FYI eggs are a real gamble . I buy some and also sell some . You can find someone to sell some about anytime . That is not to say you should buy then . Cold or hot weather can ruin your chances of a good hatch . Good can range from 2- 6 out of a dozen eggs . If you are incubating for the first time do not buy shipped eggs . You must learn to operate your incubator first on your own eggs or locally purchased eggs . If you are using one of the Styrofoam incubators there is a learning process to get good hatches .

Are these girls or boys? The orange (Sunny) I got from a weirdo, the 2 with grey heads (Shadow & Luna) I got from a breeder. I just need to know if I have to let them go or not. (don't need another rooster)

For Wheatens I always see people referred to Wayne Meredith.
I only know him by reputation, but I am working on Wheatens as well and everything goes back to Mr Meredith when they come up.
I do know Paul Smith has some, and there is someone from Arkansas on here that raises them...but I am horrible at remembering screen names! MrsBachBach maybe?

Curious as to why you mentioned "Not BBS"...as BBS has nothing to do with Wheatens?

Wheatens are not the most popular variety, but patience will land you some.

For Lavendars I'd say Jerry Segler or John Blehm.
Jerry is on here often "jerryse".

Yes, it's me. I do have a few Wheatens and blue wheatens. I am trying to increase the numbers in my flock right now. I do currently have some young blue wheaten males for sale, and I do have two wheaten males, but numbers are still too low in the females for me to sell them now. Next year, I should have some chicks for sale. Unfortunately, for the lady out east, I do not ship live birds. Hatching eggs when I have them, but not now.
