Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

x2

Jean, I am stumped on this wheaten cockerel's color. I am used to the red hackles, not this golden color. What do you think?

Love the photo bomb! When I first looked at your picture, I thought his golden hackles and saddle were the least of your problems with his glorious comb and waddles. Then I looked a little more closely at the comb and saw he had an extra beak as well. Honest--my first reaction was how the heck can you have a chicken with an extra beak? Yikes--where is my brain today????

The moisture is coming from her eyes. It's just a little lining the underside of her eyeballs. Maybe I'll get her to the vet to check for respiratory issues. She hasn't been sneezing or shaking her head. When she's out foraging her muffs get wet from that, too, but it's different than what I'm talking about. I thought maybe some of the muff feathers were up in her eyes irritating them.

Here she is last night, getting in the cuddles. Can you see the darker grey under her eyes? That is the weepy stuff.

It could be a lot of things. Is she eating and drinking normally? Is she keeping the runny eyes shut or squinting? Are they running with goopy stuff? It could be an injury or infection. Is there any redness on the eye lids or third eye lid? Is there any crustiness around the nostrils?

By the way, you might not want to have the bird on your shoulder. Chickens peck everything and they can do a lot of damage to your eye. They are fast. Your glasses might not protect your eyes.

I thought the same thing. When I saw the comb, I was thinking color was not the only problem with this roo. Then I realized it was the roo behind but I never saw the extra beak,

That is an easter egger cockerel.

I talked with the person I got her from & he says he got the Ameraucana parents from a top breeder so I'm wondering what it is that says EE - not being smart just trying to learn. Why do you say roo - it has the single row comb not all 3 like a roo. Should I get a better shot of the comb? Thanks

It is typical coloration for ee cockerels.  It has green legs, ameraucanas have white skin.  So, no green on the shanks or yellow bottoms of the feet.

It does have white skin but don't know about the bottom of the feet - I'll check. What about the single row on the comb?
