Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Hi Paul,

Did you happen to see the rooster?  If he possess blue egg genes there likely a 50% chance your little black pullet will lay green eggs, or 100% if he had two copies (one gets passed on, and the trait is dominant).  Blue shell with a brown coat over it produces the green color.  There are many genes involved in the production of brown shells so it is most likely that she has at least one hatching from a brown egg.  If the rooster came from the same stock as the hen who laid the brown egg, I would expect her to lay an off white/brown egg herself.

Just for your own information: hatching from a brown egg means that the hen that laid the egg was not Ameraucana.  She looks similar because of the beard, but chickens can possess beard and other features that look similar to Ameraucanas but if they don't have every trait including 2 copies of the blue egg shell gene they are not necessarily Ameraucana.

Crossing my fingers for you that the rooster had a blue egg gene!

Here's a photo of coco i took today, but she started becoming very vocal yet, clucking all the time and wandering in and out of the nesting boxes. Hopefully soon, her feathers look beautiful in the sun!

I can't believe I am posting this but I am in search of a black Amerucana rooster. I am in Michigan and would drive some. Would like a nice quality one but does not have to be perfect (as I know you breeders are keeping those). I am sure there are a lot of extra roos out there, and I need one for once! Thanks!

Hey guys,

Just wanted to share a picture of Bruce and a few of his ladies. I have a question regarding his saddle feathers. They appear to have a what i would call a brown/bronze sheen to them. Would this be a result of splash/black mating? He and the girls were hatched in around July and I have gotten my first 2 eggs from one of my BBS Hens. I intend to only breed Blue-Blue and keep the black O/S away from my other black ams.

Here's a shot of them:

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Pat

No, that is called leakage. You get it every once in a while.

You don't want to breed him as it will generally be worse in his offspring. And, if you are breeding him to his sisters they generally carry this but do not actually show the leakage.

Leakage from the Gold of Black-Splash parents rather than the Silver of Blue parents, right?
