Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I am wanting a little feedback on these Blues. The first picture is of the dominant one and I think the best conformation. His tail feathers are at a better angle.

This picture, if you look carefully, will show some gold bleeding in his hackle feathers. The tail is just a reflection of the light. It is not red or brown.

Although this is a poor picture of the second, his tail is at a higher angle than the first. He does not appear to have gold leakage. His beard is not as full, but I am not sure that it might be because Mr. Dominant picks at it. Also, the second ones' comb is not as big and the first one.

I am getting ready to move one to the breeding pen and that is the reason for my questions. I know these are not the best pictures, especially of the second one. Also, I will only have 5 hens with him. Both would be too many, right? Thoughts, please.

Terrible...quick, hide them in my barn! :)

Seriously, I can't wait to start getting this quality with my birds.

I have four of these chicks that are all pretty much the same. They are supposed a mix of Ameraucana and could be 3 choices. W leghorn, Barred rock, and my main question is what sex does anyone think they might be. I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of the sex.
You'd probably have better luck asking on the Easter Egger thread. With these being crosses (Easter Eggers), the people on that thread would be a bit more helpful, I think. Although, I also think they're a little young to tell yet. Give them a few more weeks...

If you have room, why not set up two pens?? A trio and a quad?? Or rotate the them through the season???....I would hate to only haave one cock bird....you lose him your done....also having the two breeding will give you added diversity...

I thought of that, but I am concerned about the gold bleeding in the hackle feathers of the one. I have another Blue roo that is gorgeous, but has major gold bleeding on his back. Such a shame as he is even prettier than these two. I have two separate breeding pens, and I have figured out how to make four with a little more work. The only problem is that I have Lavs that I will be breeding and I would love to have silvers, but they will have to wait. I have a blue wheaten male and one blue wheaten hen as well, but I am keeping him in the general laying flock population because he did not color up correctly. He will be my easter egger daddy, plus I want to see how his babies color up.

Yes, I am chicken crazy!

Thank you so much for your comments. It has taken me two years to get to this point. The first year, my Ameraucanas came from a hatchery, so you know the rest of that story. Last year, I got these from a reputable breeder and they are now ready for breeding. I will have so much fun with my chickees this year. Can't wait to see what I get with the BBS group. Hopefully a beautiful black male! My blue wheaten male did not color up correctly, so that is another avenue for me to pursue. Right now, he is my easter egger daddy...when I decide to hatch, that is.

If I were you, I would use both. I'd like to see if you could hatch sons that compare to dad with the leakage type-wise, but without leakage. All it takes is time, right? And all you need to do this is a pen to keep the extra roo in while the other takes some time with the ladies. You give one rooster time in with the hens two weeks to ensure that no other sperm is present, then collect for a week and hatch that batch. Switch roosters, rinse, repeat. With this program you could even do a trial with the roo with gold leakage as it only takes three weeks to set up just to see if you get lucky. I know that a lot of people would say don't use him at all, but the fact is that these varieties were bred all out of the same crazy EE stock and there are recessive color genetics all over the place. I would think it's worth a shot. These are the first blue roosters I've seen I like, most are just not that handsome, lol.

I hope someone can correct or confirm this, cause I'm going from a bad, partial memory, but I seem to remember that if you could find a black or blue male that is silver based, you can eliminate it. I'm thinking that I once heard that the brown/gold leakage is sex linked and can be bred out if you only breed the pullets and not the males from a line with leakage.. don't ever breed to a male with it...

Well since you asked I will try to correct you . First do not breed a leaky male . Second silver will leak also . Third no sex linkage on leakage . Females usually will not show it but can be carriers . So females from a leaky male will pass this trait on . Do not assume they are clean because they do not show leakage . Test breeding is the only way to be sure on females . Silver and gold are sex linked but that is a different topic from leakage .
