Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Pretty! I recently bought three laying hens, two Rhode Island reds and one Ameracaunas. I've had them a few days and have not yet gotten any green eggs. I have gotten brown which I assumed were from the reds. Then my friend told me her Ameracaunas lays tan/brown eggs. Is this true of any of your Ameracaunas? Or are the Brownish eggs in your pic all from other hens?

The brown eggs are from my English Rhodebars and English Orpingtons. My oldest girl was supposed to be an Ameraucana but turned out to be an EE. She was my first hen. Looked like an Ameraucana then but as I fell in love with the breed I learned to tell the difference. Plus she lays kind of pink eggs. I was hoping they were coming from one of the other hens but, nope! It was her. If it is true Ameraucana they will lay blue for sure. Some lay a greenish color I have read, but not brown or pink. I found out the hard way.

going to add another two cents to agree with the others, if it's laying anything other than a blueish colored egg, it's NOT an ameraucana. By the definitions of the APA, the eggs have to be some shade of blue

My guess would be if you bought them from a hatchery/feed store that you have Production Reds (great layers) and an Easter Egger (also great layers). Unfortuantely most modern hatcheries have gone quite far from the true characteristics of most breeds (most feed store employees don't know any better either). More than likely you will get an abundance of mint green eggs from your girl. True Ameraucanas come in strict colors, have slate colored legs, full muff and beard and lay some form of blue/green eggs. Rarely a hatchery or Farm store will carry true Ameraucanas to be sure post a pic of your fluffy butt!

Have you seen the ABC Ameraucana egg color chart? I wouldn't call some of those colors blueish. The egg color varies widely. The one color you won't find on it is olive.

She hasn't laid ANYTHING yet, do Easter eggers lay olive sometimes? I thought that I had read somewhere that Ameracaunas can lay pink, but couldn't remember if it was a reliable source. Thanks for the info, I'm going to check the abc Ameracaunas color chart

Great item to have. True chart available in their store. I am buying one to have on hand and also to compare to my computer's 'interpretation'. Lol.
