Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Looks like a pullet to me . Do you have any cock or cockerels in Ameraucana of any color . FYI if you can not find another you can use another color and breed back to white . White removes all color . First generation would have color .

You know, it took me a while to figure that out...and by that time I had found and planned to ship a white cockerel from Idaho (a nice lady here on BYC offered him to me). However in the meantime I had gotten a re-homed Splash cockerel, huge with gorgeous type, that I put with the girls. Unfortunately, about a month after we got him he turned vicious, so I passed him on to someone else. But from that mating I got 4 blue cockerels and 2 blue pullets.

Whites are supposed to be split to black (but aren't always); the color of the chicks told me that this was the case for the pullets. The white cockerel I got, in the meantime, has sired a number of OE chicks over my Marans and Welsummers. ALL of them are black, some with white hackles, so he is clearly silver based black split to white.

When my blues get a little older, I'm going to breed them against my black/white splits for more whites, blacks, and blues. I'm tickled I will be able to breed all these colors as my resources for getting new stock are limited.

The original trio.

Resulting chick.

Sire of the chick I posted earlier. He's well bred but small. If I could just breed a white Am that has the type of that splash....man o man I would be happy. :)

Ok, this thread is huge and I will go back and start reading, but yesterday I bought my first flock of Ameraucanas. Like so many others, I bought "Americanas" several years ago. I love my EEs, and they will always have a place in my flock, but I have been searching for Ameraucanas for a while now. I have over 100 chickens, and several pens. I have been experimenting with Polish for a couple of years, and they just aren't selling in my area, so this weekend I sold the entire flock to a young man that wanted to breed for 4H. I had found an Ameraucana breeder an hour away on the Breeder's Club website, and bought 17 BBS straight run chicks yesterday. I have a lot to learn about SOP, and what to cull for, but I wanted to introduce myself to the group. I hope to learn a lot from the people with much more experience than me
Welcome to the wonderful world of Ameraucana! They are truly addicting. :)

You know, if you were a little closer I was going to contact you about birds. I'm in Upstate. I have been all over your website, and love your birds. I think I accidentally got lucky on my purchase. You know how CL is, every once in a while you find something special, and I think that may have happened with these birds. An older woman bought her first birds directly from Paul Smith last year. She sent me an email from him explaining how to tell which birds came from which pens. I had never hear of him before, so I didn't think a lot of it. I googled him, and wow! I think I may have gotten lucky. These birds are only one generation removed from the breeder. I'm sure her originals weren't his show birds, but at least I know I am starting with some good blood. There were 3 six week old chicks, and fourteen 3-4 week olds. I offered her $100 for all of them, and she accepted. I took a few pics last night to see if you guys notice anything right off the bat. I'm not good with a camera, so if you guys want any specific angles just let me know.
I have been keeping chickens for 7 years, but this is the first year that I have bought birds with the intention of breeding and improving.

I'll say you lucked out! lol

Most everyone I know (including myself) can share at least one sob story of buying Ameraucanas that weren't Ameraucanas when we first started out! You are starting with the best of the best!

I bought wheaten/blue wheaten and blacks from Paul this year. I also bought a trio of blacks from Clif Redden (current Pres of the Ameraucana Breeders Club). Sadly, one of the hens didn't make the trip when the PO lost the box for over 24 hours. But I still have an absolutely gorgeous cockerel and pullet - she just started laying! I'm looking forward to what these, and the birds from Paul produce for me for next year.

I look forward to seeing more pictures of your birds. :)

I'm looking very forward to this flock, and will lean on you guys to guide me. I have Easter Eggers that I called Ameraucanas until I joined BYC. I still love the EEs, but I really wanted a pure flock. I just can't believe my luck. I got burned on some BCM back in January. They lay pretty eggs, but are exhibiting some bad characteristics. It's so nice to be starting with a better foundation with these

If you'll look at the enlarged photo again, it looks like it has mottled black legs too. Does the original poster know what type of bantam this is, or did it come from a bantam bin? I'm just curious what this little guy is....he's starting to grow on me!

Aren't silkies black skinned?  Maybe he has some silkie in him.  Black or slate legs are common enough, combs not so much.  Trying to think of breeds with black combs.

Looking at her updated pics, I see black coming in on the wattles also.  On his feet you can see white skin so I doubt he has black skin like silkies.  He is a strange one.  Never seen a mottled comb.  Hope something isn't wrong with him.

I have a banty female that has a mostly black comb with a little bit of pinky red showing through. She was born with it and is healthy as can be. Her mother had a completely black comb and no silkie in her bloodline that I know of and her father had a huge red comb along with white toes on otherwise black legs and feet. Unfortunately I lost both her parents to a fox last year. Here's a not great pic of her though. Lol

Its a bit more pink than usual from where I had to chase her a bit for a shot. Lol

On the Am note I just sold all my Ams the other day. The Roos were beautiful boys and so were the girls but they just didn't have the egg color I wanted. Theirs was green green and I want blue. :/ Seems a shallow reason but there it is. They went to a nice large farm where they can free range though so I'm happy about that. Now I just need to find some more with the egg color I'm looking for.

She looks exactly like a hen that belongs with my black/red combed Banty Roo! She is as pretty as he is! Sadly I lost most of my flock to the dog yesterday

but Mr roo and one other pullet made it. Starting over is the worst , but due to the knew flock size my only two surviving banties are being more accepting to my 3 new amercauna chicks.

And mr dog is in doggy prison (shed) for a few days until he's ready for some vigorous re-training :/ ugh starting over with chickens is the worst.

My condolences. :( Its hard losing so many or even 1 for that matter. At least you still have the 2. That fox I was talking about killed all my banties but 3 and my favorite 2 big girls at the time. I was devastated. I just came home yesterday to find my current favorite banty dead in her run. No damage I could see although she had a weird mucus all over her face. :( Everyone else is healthy as can be. Just works out that way sometimes.

Sorry about your dog. We had an outdoor Jack Russel Terrier that was fine for 4 or 5 years and this year he decided to kill one of the young pullets that I hatched. My husband dispatched him before I even knew what happened. Our chickens are much more valuable to us than our dog. Good luck with your re-training!
