Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

If you want to try anything at all with that leaky blue male (don't know how bad he is) that is the female I would try him with, the very dark blue one. Keep a male from her, see what he turns out to be. If good, then a female from him, then a male from her. See what happens. If no leakage, then original hen passed on enough melanizers.

No, no, that leaky blue is getting some BCM hens to make olive eggers. I'm just going to keep an eye on the offspring of the other 2 roosters that came with him.
I think my splash is the best looking rooster, anyway, but I know absolutely nothing. Ravyn likes my black ,but Ravyn always likes the black birds

They are still filling out, and I am very happy with how they all look. I just started getting my first few eggs, so I hope to be incubating by January

Well, if you want to produce all blues the obvious choice is a black to splash mating.  Things don't always go as planned though and other characteristics may be more important than color.  Obvious faults could lower your choices.

There is that. I personally love splash the best. If I could make the perfect combo happen I would have a Splash roo that is hardfeatherd but split for silkied, then 5 silkied hens with 2 black, 2 blue and one splash. But I have a limit of ordering 12 eggs and I will be happy with whatever I get from that. When my family and I move to a bigger place with more land I will be able to be pickier. Until then I have a notebook for all the advice I get.

That spot on the shoulder? That's all I can see from the picture. Usually you see leakage in the hackles. I think the reddish color means he is carrying gold instead of silver, but, imo, there are alot of blues carrying gold instead of silver. I guess that happens from matings to blacks. He has a very nice muff/beard and nice comb. Can't see type from the pic. How old is he?
The only reason I mentioned what I did is because not all people realize that all birds are hiding color. You have to have the proper genes to cover or hide the undesirable color. I'm not 100% on this but I think in the case of blacks ,or E blacks, they are covering white for example. Not sure if that's the case in ER blacks.

It's not just the two roosters that came with him, it's the offspring from the hens that need to be watched. Hens won't express the leakage, but can pass it to their chicks.

He is 6 months. He has a few of those reddish, rust colored feathers in his shoulder, but his hackles look clean. The muffs and combs on all 3 boys are really nice, so that's why I'm looking more at the coloring. Paul did a really good job with these birds, so I'm hoping to just not go backwards

Given that they all came in the same straight run batch, but from 3 different pens, I planned to watch them all. I just assumed that they could all possibly be carrying. I will only have 4 hens per pen, so it should be a little easier to tell who laid what egg and mark the chicks as they hatch.

I've posted pictures of them before, but since you guys are here and commenting today, I will post them again.
