Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Breeding blacks and blues together is not recommended for show quality birds. http://AmeraucanaAlliance.org/forum/index.php?topic=33/0

I want everyone to know I am just learning! I am just trying the best I can to take in as much info so I can make the best choice. I am not saying one is right and the other is wrong. I think there are a lot of different opinions and factors involved Depending on the birds and genes each bird is carrying! I would also like to know what is the best route when working with BBS!

How does that effect the B/B/S birds, or does it make a difference? I ordered some splash hatching eggs and I want to order some Blue and Black (preferably silkied) and I am wondering what color rooster to keep for the best colored offspring? Does E or ER make a noticible difference?
If it did, it would make it much easier to tell what the bird carried.

I'm really enjoying this discussion. This is all new to me, so it's nice to hear from the more experienced members. I will never get as deep as to do genetic testing, I won't even show. I just want to breed birds that are good enough to sell to someone that may be wanting to raise for show. My current flock is BBS, with my keeper cockerels being a splash and a black. My current plan is to divide them into two pens, like this:
Pen 1: Splash rooster
2 black hens
2 darkest blue hens

Pen 2: Black Rooster
1 black hen
2 lighter blue hens
1 splash hen

Thoughts?

I would put your black hens with the splash cockerel and the blues and splashes with the black cockerel.

I thought about that, and I really appreciate the insight. The only reason I wanted a blue with the splash is so that I can get some splash chicks. I know that isn't a show color, but 95% of my customers only want pet chickens, and I'm getting a lot of comments on my splash pair. That would be a big seller for me. So maybe put the 3 blacks and a blue with the splash, then the rest with the black?
I also have a blue rooster, but he is leaky, so he's getting some BCM hens

I'm super new at Ameraucanas. Can you explain why you are suggesting those pairings? Thanks!

Friday!
