Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Ravyn you are a life saver! Thank you sooo much 4 putting my mind at ease!!! YOU are indeed an Angel on this site and to people like me! they r eating and drinking great and very active!

I know ones who would beg to differ, lol...

Really, I am just passing on info as it was passed to me when I needed it... it's what this site is all about...

I believe in paying it forward... hopefully our world will improve one day if we continue to do so... :)

Thank you very much!  They aren't laying right now...I wonder why?  my other hens are

Looks like they're molting, hon... give them some extra protein and after their new feathers come in they'll start up again... feathers are made of pure protein, so the protein they'd normally give to eggs has to go to new feathers... very pretty girls... :)

Right now I have 3 BCM,2 sapphire and 14 ameraucanas all in one large house with a large run and they get along good.I also have 2 Royal Palm and three Narragansett Turkeys in with them. No problems they all grew up together though. I don't know why but my hens always pluck the feathers out of the main roosters beard. They don't pluck any other feathers! They just groom his beard. Before I found homes for all my other chickens. They did the same! This batch had never been with the other ones to learn from them!

I've only had 2 roos in the past 5 yrs and had to re-home them so I can't speak too knowledgeably about them. Chickens in general seem to do grooming habits on each other. I suppose some chickens can take grooming to a cannibalistic level like Leghorns who are prone to assertiveness to outright cannibalism on gentler breeds. Our Buff Leghorn was a really sweet pretty pullet and then at 1 y/o she started chasing, harassing, and yanking out the crests, muffs, and beards of the Silkies and gentle Ameraucana. Had to re-home her. Our friends' 6 m/o cockerels were mercilessly harassed and pecked by adult hens and the cockerels had to be separated out. From what I understand hens gang up on cockerels and most breeders keep their cockerels in a separate pen until they mature and gain confidence around the girls.
