He is beautiful to look at! What a lovely breed these birds are. When u decided to cull him to his new home what were his faults? Can I guess to say his tail would be set too high as he looks here as an adult? Would his back be too swayed?...would he be lacking in an overall balanced look? I'm just looking at the beauties being posted and or critiqued. And trying to learn which birds are closer to the breed standard. Especially you guys who are breeding them per the standard.
I have BBS and a couple of Self Blues (lavenders) pullets. This cockerel is still very young, six months. I didn't critique him..... I went with Black because I thought at the time I wanted to learn more before I tried Self Blue. Just as a side note..... my Ams are laying pretty much every day or every other. They are so sweet and follow me around. One blue goes everywhere I go without the flock. She is very vocal too and talks to me the whole time we are exploring the woods. This morning on one of those walks I flushed a covey of quail. Scared me just as it did when I was young. I was glad to see them. We have lost most of our quail population. My experience with Ams is very different than some others that I have read on this thread. I like them a lot..... having said that I am not in my second year. I don't know if they will stop laying as many have experienced. My hens are chunky, chatty and are not flighty/skittish.He is beautiful to look at! What a lovely breed these birds are. She sounds so sweet! She must really be special! I get so attached..I tell my best friend in Missouri that she doesn't give them enough love that's why their not laying as well! Its all a joke between us. But funny, cause sometimes as soon as I give them some early morning treats & spend about 20 minutes with them they are so happy and start doing chicken things! As if to say it's time to get down to business! Lol! whereas b4 I would walk in the pen they would just be hanging out. Its almost like they're seeing an old friend every day! They greet me very much like dogs & cats & horses have! Anyway, I'll consider it a bonus if they are good layers! But then I might try hatching some out. I will see how my whole chicken venture goes!I have BBS and a couple of Self Blues (lavenders) pullets. This cockerel is still very young, six months. I didn't critique him..... Loss of habitat and hunters. What's eating your quail?
Funny you should mention spending time with them. Sometimes if one of my pullets sees me headed to the coop they go with me and then start the egg laying scenario. It is like they just didn't want to go alone. You know how girls are they always want someone with them whether it be going to the restroom or laying an egg! LOLShe sounds so sweet! Oh my gosh! To this day my bff's hubby still can't understand why we go "pee" together sometimes! It was just a girlfriend (referred to for a best friend) thing back in the 1980s! My hubby gets it, but Terry never has! He's also anal!Funny you should mention spending time with them. You'd think wouldn't you?! I told him about SC's incubator & all the babies...he was unimpressed! Lol! Thank goodness he let me have my Ameraucana! Future Ameraucanas! He just informed me that he likes the chickens second best ranking just under our dogs!! But then while he's wining about a second pen, he says he wants 2 white leg horns! Lol!Happy builder happy wife! I would say thats a win win!
