Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

If selling chicks, they are selling the potential to be show quality, based on years of line development and reduction of disqualifying flaws. There are no guarantees that they will be better than pet quality, but the odds of getting an exceptional bird are increased dramatically over purebred hatchery birds.

I don't show birds, or sell chicks or hatching eggs intended for exhibition, but I would still invest in the best stock possible if I were raising pure varieties.

I'm aware of that, but that isn't what was said. I sell potential show quality chicks, but even I don't charge 20-30 a chick! If someone is selling a chick for 20 bucks stating they are show quality chicks they are full of it. That is what I was saying. If they say it came from a flock with show quality stock, and someone wants to pay that price, well, to each his own. Now, I'm talking Ameraucanas, not those thousand dollar black skinned birds!

Editing to state the 15-20 per chick, not 30.

There is at least one big commercial hatchery that claims to have "blue Ameraucana" and the way I read their site they are asking $16.96 for straight run day-old chicks. I don't know of any breeders that would charge that much though.
It does make a difference if shipping is included and it can cost up to around $45 to ship a box of 25 chicks using Priority Express Mail, depending on distance.
Once you buy the birds it costs the same to feed and house a cheap one as is it does an expensive one.
I do believe "purebred" for all the Standard traits is nearly impossible to achieve and that is why I prefer "standard bred".

I don't know how anyone can claim their chick is show quality.  That's an impossible claim to make.  I've never seen anyone want 20-30 bucks for a chick!  I think 10 is probably the most I've seen and I wouldn't even pay that!  Not for a week old chick.  I've never charged that either.

Point taken on "standard" vs "pure". Your AKC analogy is a bit off the mark as dogs must be pedigreed to show, poultry not so, the genotype does not seem to matter as long as the phenotype is correct. It's interesting to read historic breed SOPs dating back to the early days of the breed, and today's, or to view old show photos of champion birds. I can't say that all the changes made to what were for the most part useful fowl have been for the better of the breed as a functional bird.

It's Chick Time!

I know some of you have already fired up the incubators, some are holding out for better weather, and some, like me, are drooling over chick pics and itching to get started!

This is a great time for us to do some refreshing on the website gallery! I'd love to get some great new chick pics of each variety or project colors. Even a bit older chicks, like the 8 week old wheaten pullet we have on there now, make great educational resources for all us Ameraucana fanciers out there!

So, when you're sharing pictures of your cute little fluffy bottoms on Facebook...send a few to [email protected] for the website gallery.

I can't guarantee that every picture will be used, and even those not used now, may be used later. We don't give credit on the website for who's picture it is, but you'll know. :)

My chicks won't come for two weeks! How long do we have?
