Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Wow, John, those eggs are gorgeous. I'd like to get more color in my eggs. Out of 8 hens, all eggs are an identical shade of pale blue. With all eggs being the same color, it is impossible to only set the bluest eggs. Do you have any suggestion that wouldn't require an extremely in depth explanation as to breeding to improve egg color?
Bringing in a bird that lays bluer eggs would be the quickest way, but you can select the best you can from what you have and work on it for years. They may be an identical shade, but look for gloss and select for it over dull. Next year breed from a cockerel and pullet from the shiniest or glossiest eggs. Select again for eggs that aren't dull and maybe by then some will appear a little bluer. Do the same thing over and over, year after year. Eventually you'll select more for size and shape also.

That helps John, thanks. There are definitely eggs that are more glossy. I'm not ready to bring in new blood yet because I'm so new at this and am just trying to learn what I have, so the long way around is fine with me. Thanks :thumbsup

Please don't bother with the "mr".
Overall LF silvers lay a smaller egg than LF lavenders, but size, shape and color vary from pullet/hen to pullet/hen within every variety. At one time LF silvers and wheatens laid the bluest eggs of all LF varieties, but today my LF blacks produce the most consistently large to extra-large BLUE eggs.
LF silvers and wheatens had always been smaller and lacking in type compared to the other varieties. Another line of silvers were/are smaller than mine. Mine now have the size and type.

Those are Awsome color eggs!

Would you have a picture of Wheaten eggs? I have been wanting Wheaten/Blue Wheaten. My husband likes the Wheatens! I have heard that it depends on the line they come from on size, color and amount of eggs laid. I am just in the thinking about getting them for next year stage. I havn't 100% talked myself into them! They are very pretty! Thank you!

I dropped LF wheatens from my flocks several years ago. As you said, it depends on the line but overall I believe they were/are about the size and shape of a regular leghorn egg. I also believe that because of the Mediterranean influence LF wheaten Ameraucanas lack in size & type and some lay white eggs.
An outcrossing breeding project, as I've done with LF silvers, is needed to bring LF wheatens closer to the standard.

Thank you! I just wanted to get different opinions before I take the leap! So the eggs in the picture are silvers?
