Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I put a thing in the chicks house to teach them to roost! Not one roosted on it! My last batch of BCM slept on the floor till 17 weeks old. Every night I would go out and put them on the roost! I was about ready to put them in a pot! Learn to roost or soup!!! :rant I sold most of them! I still have 4 Ameraucanas and 1 BCM that sleep in the nest! Every night I put them on the roost! Picture of the thing! If I where a three week old chick I would like a gym to climb on! The first tier is about 12" off the ground!
X2 There's no way they are going to be comfortable on that if they are slipping. I use rounded edge 2x2s
I agree... they like to be able to grip well... Another thought... keep that and look in the pet area of Walmart or go to pet shop and see if you can find the sandpaper like perch covers used for cockatiels and parrots... use hot glue to secure them to the bars... I've used them when I had a small dowel and it worked great...

good idea. They also sell that tape at Lowe's. It's called stair safety tape

The 17 week old chickens have a wood roost but won't use them! They sleep on the nests and I keep putting them up at night. So what is the deal? The older chickens use the roosts! The 3 week olds have 2x2 already but won't use them so I thought I would try that metal one! Any Ideas?

I will try that! They have wood roosts 2 x 2 but I have never seen any of them on it. It may be to far from the light. When I have gone out at night they are not huddled under the light though!

Yes, thank you for clarifying what I was trying to describe -- rounded edge 2x2 is what I have and they seem perfect perches - they came removeable for cleaning with my ordered coop from Utah and I never expected the hens would like them. I tried the 2x4 for a flat surface like some owners suggested but sometimes my hens prefer the flatter surface of a nestbox over the 2x4 so we removed the 2x4 plank. Some owners like the rounded edge 3" perches but our hens really liked the 2x2. We left the rounded edge 2x2's in place. It's amazing what good grips chickens have with their feet/toes.

Ok, This is two of the three types of roosts that I have! So what should I try besides these? Most of the chicken will use them but I have about 5 that are about 17 weeks old that just won't learn. I have never had chickens that didn't learn to sleep on a roost. They want to sleep on the edge of the nest boxes and poo in them!
