Ok, This is two of the three types of roosts that I have! So what should I try besides these? Most of the chicken will use them but I have about 5 that are about 17 weeks old that just won't learn. I have never had chickens that didn't learn to sleep on a roost. They want to sleep on the edge of the nest boxes and poo in them!

The nest boxes are where mine like to nest.

I finally gave up trying to change their minds!

Try lowering the height of the roosts, they may be afraid to go that high! Worth a try

what about those landscape timbers? I'm thinking those look like good roosts! Their only 3.25 a timber here! That's what I'm gonna try.

What you see in the picture is the top tier! There is a shorter tier. So I am stumped!

They should carry it! I just liked the natures bedding a little better then the other kind our store carries. Just because it has a better scent! As long as it is pine not ceder you will be good!

Scent? I HOPE that means whatever the stuff it is made of smells like, not some added fragrance so people think it smells "nice". I wouldn't want my chicks inhaling those chemicals. There are far too many noxious chemicals used to make so many products "smell nice" today.

Just a thought - but maybe try wood rather than metal perch? Maybe a 3" rounded top wood perch? I have a 2" rounded top wood perch and even my LF like it.

My 7 June 2015 chicks, broody raised, didn't roost at night until they were about a month old and they started on the 4' high roosts with the then 3 Y/O hens (except their surrogate mom who stayed in the nest box until only 2 were left) even though there is a parallel roost at 2' off the floor. But during the day they were more than happy to hang out on something that was in the barn. I don't even know what it is supposed to be used for but it has 5 parallel 'pipes' about 1" in diameter welded into side pieces that can be screwed to the wall and hold the pipes out about 3-4". I had it leaning against the wall and the chicks just decided they wanted to perch on it. Not that they ever used the little set of wood "bleachers" I made for the brooder area in the coop.

The 17 week old chickens have a wood roost but won't use them! They sleep on the nests and I keep putting them up at night. So what is the deal? The older chickens use the roosts! The 3 week olds have 2x2 already but won't use them so I thought I would try that metal one! Any Ideas?

I would close off the nest boxes, force them to make the decision to sleep elsewhere. Of course, they may just choose the floor. Another possibility is that the older girls won't let them come up on the roosts. I don't know why mine never used the 2' high roost, maybe because all the other birds were up high??

It's just the smell of pine wood. It's not added scent. Chickens can be so funny! I have never had chickens take this long to learn to roost. I will keep working with them till they learn. I hope that the three week olds learn to roost young so I don't have 34 that I have to put on the roost at night.

Good morning out there my friends! Been really busy with my new chicks their beautiful and I'm so happy with them! My little blue wheatens are crawling all over my arms, and the little blacks are warming up too! The blues seem to be the shyest of this batch. My DH has barely looked at them and he walked in and said hi to the little ones and boy did they scatter this morning! They obviously know who mama is. Lol.

If you got your Ameraucana from a feed store, then you have Easter Eggers. That chick looks like an Australorp.

Looks like a black Ameraucana chick to me but Im no expert there are people and breeders here with a wealth of knowledge! The shanks aren't all black though..the others will know for sure
