I suppose I should try to find a home for my black cockerel with the bad beak. Doesn't it figure he's the sweetest of the black boys...he's always looking at me with that big eye. I love his eyes.. their very expressive..
That would have freaked me out 6 months ago! Lol.

I am starting to worry about you! LOL I hate rehoming the sweet ones..... I had a BCM cockerel that was totally dependent on me. He was bullied by everyone and stayed by himself. He was always running to me to help him. I carried him to the roost every night. I had to find him a home because he was not strong, he lacked vigor and I didn't want that in my program. Thank goodness chickens are a lot easier to give up than dogs, cats, etc.

I know, I just can't help it. Of course he's one of my favorites...very true about the dogs and cats..I love all animals to a fault sometimes...

But it was still hard to let go wasn't it? I sure don't want any beak deformities and won't use him. I feel guilty passing him on. I don't have the heart to destroy him though...
Oh my what if nobody wants him? Really who would? Unless they culled hard...I would never be dishonest though. I worry way too much about everything.

Excellent explanation, and exactly what I was looking for. My goal this year was to kick out as many blues as possible to get a good blue cockerel. After reading your post, that me want to dedicate one or two pens to breeding only blues. I'm not nearly experienced enough to use another breed to bring in lacing, but I could take the time to dedicate some space to blue-only breeding.

Just a friendly thought, I know I'm jumping into the middle of a conversation. tigercreek is right, to keep breeding chickens together trying to get a trait in this case a lacing gene. If none of your brood fowl has the needed gene, you end up with a bunch of chickens that lack the quality you desire. In this case good lacing.

Lol! Uh huh..the no responses almost killed me! . You guys probably thought I was surely brain dead to not know when a baby chicken was breeding my hand! But things just aren't always as obvious as they seem. My BFF just reminded me of that the other day.
Guess you guys know by now I'm pretty much an open book. No shame here!

Yesterday was the first day I was able to put chicks outside in the "new" (read "old", but redone) grow out pen. I am getting such a kick out of going out there and just sitting and watching them, so I thought I'd share a few pics. The wheatens/blue wheatens and 4 of the smaller blacks hatched 2/29. The other five blacks hatched 2/18.

I called them, not sure if they'd come or not since they have this big area to play in, but here they all came

Why do W/BW Ameraucanas have such a pale gray to almost willow-looking legs? My BW Amer has such pale legs -- her sister had pretty blue legs but died as a juvenile unfortunately.

If it makes you feel better! I can't take my husband with me to show people our turkeys! My hen Looooooves him!!! Then the tom makes his move! Yep! Right in front of a nice family and about 7 kids!!!

That's hilarious! And the Tom turkey figures he better up his game no doubt before his lady finds a new man! Ha I guess she already has!
