That was my point. If no wheaten chicks were produced, then the pairing must have been splash wheaten to blue wheaten. Splash to splash would have produced only splash chicks, and two blue parents would have produced at least one or two wheaten chicks. It is clear that the rooster is Blue, not Splash. Therefore, the hen must be Splash. It is the only possibility, given the offspring.

I just can't agree with that. Not necessarily. It really depends on the number of chicks hatched. There is a 25% chance of wheaten chicks being hatched. It simply isn't a given, especially in small hatches.

I had the same thoughts. I agree with you. Blue wheaten mated to blue wheaten will typically produce 1/2 blue wheaten, 1/4 wheaten and 1/4 splash wheaten chicks, but that is on average and not guaranteed. Wheatens may have just not happened this go around, or if additional chicks were hatched, the wheatens may have went to another owner.

These are a few of her other babies that didn't make the other picture they look like her. So does that make mom blue or splash?

My 2 Blue Ameraucana hens. ( With some Doms and a Jubillee Orpington scattered in there.) We miss our black AM roo and hope to get another this fall or winter for flock protection. We just keep having bad luck with them! The darker hen, Jolene lays a gorgeous blue egg and the lighter, chubbier one-Fancy- lays a pretty greenish egg. Could be bluer, but we don't mind, she's a lovely bird with a very funny personality. Hopefully we get to breed at least Jolene again in the future. They both lay an egg a day!

What pretty BLUES! I miss our Blue girl. We ordered her from a fancy website -- she was so pretty and sweet -- but she arrived riddled with cocci and worms and vet said she had them for a while to be so sick - he tried to save her but we had to put her down 2 weeks after receiving her! You can sort of tell she doesn't look well, hunched over, and the breeder wouldn't admit they sent us a sick bird in spite of proof of tests from the vet the first day we received her! Plus the second bird that came with her was supposed to be a pullet and it turned out a cockerel we had to rehome! You can bet I won't use THAT breeder again! I can maybe let go one mistake with one bird but shipping two with something wrong and not owning up to all the errors??!!! The vet treated the cockerel and we saved him and rehomed him but the pullet was too far gone

Well, I was taken in by the pretty website thinking the breeder would be up-and-up. If anyone is seeking quality Ameraucanas I strongly suggest referrals by BYCers or one of the Ameraucana organizations to find qualified reputable breeders of true Ameraucanas. I've lost 3 Ameraucanas in 3 yrs from different breeders and am kinda gun-shy at this point. These are sweet-natured and rare birds and very few reliable breeders yet. That's why I'm glad to see a couple Am organizations to rely on now for dedicated quality breeders.

I have always bought chicks. Then I know how they are taken care of. Glad you didn't give up entirely. There are good breeders out there. There's nothing better than being referred to someone for good quality birds.

I have always bought chicks. Then I know how they are taken care of. Glad you didn't give up entirely. There are good breeders out there. There's nothing better than being referred to someone for good quality birds.

Wish I could do chicks but I'm zoned for 5 hens, no roos, so getting even a minimum order of chicks would not work for me as much as I'd love the babies -- I have no outlet for surplus birds. I've always ordered juveniles 2 to 4 months old when they are already easily identified male or female and old enough to keep in-house for quarantine and give us fun bonding with the juvie(s).
