Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Personally, I wouldn't use beardless... and not sure I would use any related ones either... as one who has had beardlessness pop up and been fighting it, it is a major pain to fight to get out... jmo...

If you don't mind me asking, what is your plan to get everyone back to homozygous brearded (also referred to as double mb correct?) How long have/had you been fighting it?

For many reasons I plan on doing single mating anyway and some Black Sex-links will be in the pen so if I hatch some EEs I can test homozygous vs heterozygous cockerels for the beards/muffs. I can almost guarantee I will have some heterozygous cockerels for beard/muff. That should be pretty straight forward if all EE chicks hatch with a beard cockerel is Homozygous and if any hatch out beardless he would be only heterozygous. That's just what I'm thinking...

It's been a couple years now... every time it looks clear, it pops up again... I'm culling them...

Oddly enough, all the EE's and Olive Eggers I hatched from them had great beards...

If you want to work through it and know what you're in for, then more power to you... I wish you much better luck than I have had... not something I want to deal with again is all... :)

That's a pretty good idea... breeding the Ameraucana to a non Ameraucana to test for hetero/homozygous beard gene. You'd have to look for beardless, like you said because beard size does not always indicate how many copies of the beard gene your chicken has.

@RavynFallen I agree that some easter eggers can have some serious beards/muffs. Some of my easter eggers' beards are bigger than faverolles! It's crazy. I mean, one of my pullets is a drop dead gorgeous Ameraucana with a sad little beard and my easter egger has a cloud of fluff bigger than her head.

Thank you everyone for your help. Out of 17 eggs we have so far 1 Lavender, 1 Splash (the hen pecks at this one a lot), 2 Blues, & 2 Blacks. 10 more eggs to go. I think with it being so hot and dry here it is taking them longer to hatch and Dash is not sitting on them but hovering over them. Then in the heat of the day she is next to them.

I haven't made up my mind yet, that's why I asked. I gotta know what I'm in for! ;) Well that busts my plan to breed to a non Ameraucana. Dang! Did you test the hens too? Sounds like A LOT of test mating to fix it...

Birds with a full muff and beard have two copies of the gene. Sparse muff and beard have one copy of the gene. Clean faced birds have no gene.

mmbb X mmbb = 100% offspring with full muff and beard

mmbb X mb = 50% full muff and beard, and 50% with small muff and beard

mb X mb = 50% small muff and beard, 25% full muff and beard, 25% clean faced

None X mb = 100% small muff and beard
