Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I couldn't agree more. The problem is so many folks have been deceived into believing that by telling the truth you are somehow doing the wrong thing. In my mind, allowing a child to be deceived is a very unloving thing to do.

I happen to know of one instance that happened this year where a child actually won Best of Show with an obvious white Easter Egger. Now, what do you suppose would be the reaction of that same child if it were to say go to the Ohio Nationals and wind up be DQ'd instead of just being marked down? Can you imagine the embarrassment and possibly unnecessary shame the child would feel?

Unfortunately the society by and large has been conditioned to "look the other way", or not say anything for fear of hurting one's feelings, or "just let it go", that many fail to realize today that more harm comes from letting a falsehood go unanswered than the good that would otherwise come from bringing the truth to the light.

God Bless,

its only down hill from here!

So I want some input from you guys. I am thinking of buying two SQ Paul Smith Pullets directly from him one blue and one black. They are about 6 months old so they have put a lot of time and money into them. It will cost me a pretty penny close to $200 dollars to have them shipped here! I would love to have these birds but I am leaving for college in the fall. I am hopeing that I will go to a school with a farm and may possible be able to bring my flock with me not sure yet at all though. I may also have to sell the birds or my mom will keep them. What do you think? I have a nice flock of 1 cockeral and 5 black pullets already and they are also Smith lines. Should I spend the cash and get the birds without knowing the future of my flock? How much do you think I could get for a SQ or BQ flock of Black and Blue Ameraucana? Any advice or input would be apreciated.

Thanks,
Henry

I agree with you. I think children need to know the ropes and develop an attitude of "aspiring to the real world"--I think, too, though, that adults need to take time to kindly, gently educate children and help them understand and work in competent directions.

thats what I was thinking since it was the juniors class right???

I think the judge would have done better to tell the child that his/her bird is not an Ameraucana and show the child the Ameraucana standard in the SOP and explain what the child should look for in his/her next Ameraucana. You do not have to be an Ameraucana guru to read the opening paragraph for the breed in the SOP to a child. I think that would be the responsible and right thing to do rather than lead the child to think the marks against the bird were the only problems. How else would the child learn?

I also a agree and thats comeing from a younger person I think its unfair to lie or smudge the truth just because someone is a begginer. Any ideas about my last post?

Alpine, I agree with you too. Giving them the truth is one thing but there are ways that it can be done where it ain't as painful. I am reminded of something Adrian Rogers said many years ago. A man I respected a lot. Adrian said it perhaps best when he said, “It's better to tell the Truth that hurts and then heals - then it is to tell a lie that comforts and then kills."

Henry, far be it from me to tell you to not buy birds from Paul as he's got some great birds and his BBS are even better than the WBS I got from him. If I remember correctly, he posted something on the ABC recently saying he just won several big awards in MO with his BBS. Having said that, if I were in your shoes, I'd hold off.

God Bless,

Ya I am thinking about holding off. I just don't know the future of my flock and its seems like its a lot of money for little reward because they won't be a part of a long term breeding project.

My white splash Ameraucana was hatched in late February '09; hasn't layed an egg yet. I'm guestimating that she's about 34 weeks old. We're in New York, so winter is coming on soon. Lately, it's been about 40 to 50 degrees at night and 50 to 60 degrees during the day. They free range in a big yard for about three hours a day with lots of sunshine. The rest of the time, they're in their run. The run is entirely covered in clear plastic roofing panels, so there's plenty of daylight in there. I'm wondering what is the oldest laying age that you all have found with your Ameraucanas. i.e., what's the longest time that I still have to wait to get an egg from her. Am also wondering of course if the cold of winter or the shorter days of winter will keep her from laying for another six months when Spring arrives. (Yikes !) What's your best guess? She's very lively; eats and drinks well; coos and clucks and seems real happy. Loves to lie down with one leg and one wing outstretched in the sun whenever she wanders into a spot of sunshine.

I waited for a while maybe 34 weeks for eggs from my Faverolles. I am giving my girls light and still not getting any eggs

The blue ones are from my W/BW Ameraucanas... once I get the BW roo next week we'll see if he can get the job done and I'll start a hatch in Dec. or Jan.

Upper right one came from my GC Maran today. Her first... and we are thinking double yolker. It's HUGE.

The light from the flash really washed out the true colors of these eggs.... my two EE green eggs look pale
