Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Mahonri- Pretty eggs I am happy you will be getting a nice boy those girls and you deserve it!

schellie69- My advice would be to find a breeder near you or to order from a nationally known breeder. The second bird looks like a blue pullet to me. Sorry about the EE's its always tricky! I have also fallen in love with the Ameraucana breed!

Well I still can't decide about the Smith pullets.

I haven't found any breeders near me yet, I am not sure how much breeding I can do we live in town, but I am hoping when we get our farm to do breeding with some different Ameraucanas and bantam EE's because I love my bantams they are so cute. look a lot like Ameraucana's so have to find right roo for them too. right now just happy with their eggs which are really pretty blue.

thanks for the advice, Henry I would wait, until you know what is going to happen with collage, just my opinion would worry about having to much on your shoulders with school and everything. good luck with what ever you decided.

Thanks I think I am going to wait we will see how long they can hold the two pullets for me. You may have to hatch eggs or pay shipping on adult birds which is quite expensive! There are Bantam Lavenders go to www.chickhatchery.com that is John Belhms website he is a well respected ameraucana breeder. I live in the suburbs and so far my rooster has been working pretty well so you never know until you try.

Well to spite everyones advice to the contrary I am going to do it I think.

It might be stupid but I might as well just go ahead and do it. I think I am going to decide on colleges by who out of the 10 schools I apply to will let me bring my flock

have fun with your new birds. I am still in search of my addition to my flock not sure which way to go yet, buy I know the answer is just around the corner. Do all Ameraucana lay blue eggs, I thought I saw some that lay a really dark almost red egg or is that a different bird, does any one know of site that shows birds and the color of their eggs. thank you very much you are all so much help I am so thankful I found this site have a great Thursday.

Good Morning! I have a dilema. As a newbie and an addicted one at that, I hatched out alot of different breeds of chickens. I wanted to find "my favorites" and now I have alot of different breeds.
I have narrowed it down to 3 main breeds to keep and I can probably keep 2 more.
I do have Ameracaunas from the Cree line and they are beautiful.

Here is my dilema. Why do all of you keep and breed your Ameracauna's. What trait do they have that makes them special to you. So far they are not standing out as one of the ones to keep. I have B/B/S.

Is it for their eggs?
For their beauty?
They are not "dual purpose" are they? Mine are not as friendly as my other chickens. A couple are but for the most part they aren't.

I don't mean to offend anyone, I really would like to know.

I am also new to the chicken thing lol, I got chickens for eggs at first then I got on this site and realized there is so much more to chickens I like the Ameraucana because they are just so pretty that is to me, I was told when I bought my chickens that my bantams were Ameraucanas which I have since found out they are EEs witch is fine I love them anyway I just like the look of the Ameraucana I have, One blue that I just got 4 EE bantams, 2 buff orhangtons, and 2 barred rock (which I love to death) would actually like to find a bantam barred rock, and 2 red star sex link, I have decided to get a roo and breed my EE"s for now just because I live in town and can't have more then 15 chickens when I move to my farm (when i find one lol ) I want to raise Ameraucana's for breeding just because I have fallen in love with them. I guess the best way to decide is find the ones that you fall in love with then go with those, because you will have a passion for them. You might find that you love more then one kind just follow your gut and it will tell you whats right for you, not sure I have been much help but that is how I have developed my chickens. oh and I might bread my one Ameraucana if I find a roo that I like that is close enough for me to buy. I like the lavender ones that are just starting to be developed I am looking for a duel purpose, roo one that I can breed to my Ameraucana and my EE's with. good luck with picking your flock.

Thanks schellie, that is what I am trying to do. I just wonder if I am missing something? Mine are still young and their personality probably hasn't come out fully yet.

Still wondering about everyone else?
