Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Ann,

I would love to show my Ameraucanas at the Big Bird Classic Show but I have never shown and I don't know the rules or anything else. If you could help me out with some info, I'll be happy to attend.

Here is one of my Black Ameraucana cocks. Does he look worthy?

those darn egg color threads over a the ABC forum have me all worried I'm gonna get a bunch of easter eggs from my birds...

Surely someone on here (or several) will have an opinion of what i may end up with...
I ordered 10 lav and 15 black LF from John Blehm...due in april. From the thread i read at ABC, it seems as though I should be expecting an egg basket similar in color to my EE flock. Hopefully I was really tired when reading this and it is not true. Truth be told, I am one of the ones who doesn't really care what an Ameraucana looks like, not that I would intentionally breed against a standard, but I did mainly decide to purchase some birds because my "ameraucana" I got last year (from ideal) were not what i had expected.

So, what do you think? I'm sure I could end up with all my pullets laying khaki eggs, or maybe they all will lay white eggs, or all olive, or all beautiful sky blue..... but what is the most probable scenario regarding the proportion of egg colors from these birds? I would hope that they would all lay nice blue eggs, maybe with some small percentage of olive thrown from the lavenders since they are such a young variety with their color coming from brown egg laying breeds...

That egg color thread over there was funny, people were getting all fired up, but it is understandable. It is interesting to see comments from "reputable breeders" that were so varied.... how varied do the opinions get here... how important is that blue egg, do you breed from stock that is physically to standard AND lays a khaki or olive egg? Who has the bluest eggs in the land? Why?

I hope April hurries up and comes here, I want to be an official Ameraucana owner.... and I want to eat morels. Happy Monday!

Nate, I would not refer to them as "rules" but there are some fairly simple requirements and guidelines for showing your birds at any show

First, if you are traveling out of state know the health requirements of the state you plan on showing in. These will be included in the show catalog and rarely are anything beyond having your birds Pullorum tested before the show, and healthy at the show. For our instate exhibitors we are hoping to have a state tester at the show in the event they can not get their birds Pullorum tested before the show. Obviously, if you have an NPIP flock this requirement has already been met.

Secondly, bring a healthy purebred bird that you feel is a good representative of the breed and hopefully in good feather. This usually, but not always excludes hatchery birds (the purebred part).

Third, Your bird will need a numbered leg band. I have found that the "tamper-proof" band requirement you see in most show catalogs is unnecessary. I wing band my birds for pedigree reasons and I use the spiral numbered legbands on them for further ID and for the shows. I have not met a judge yet that cared if my birds leg band was "tamper-proof" or not.

Fourth, try to get your bird used to a cage before the show and if it needs a bath (most white birds do) than bath them. I know a lot of exhibitors who are very successful and never bath their birds. But they mostly show blacks, BB Red's, and other darker colors.

I don't critique anyone's birds - learned my lesson on that a long time ago.

Besides, I know next to nothing about your breed - but he looks purty to me!

From the breed list on your bio I am hoping you will have some other good large fowl to bring along with the Ameraucanas.

Well someone layed their first egg yesterday in the Ameraucana pen. Makes me happy that someone started but the egg color is less than desired. Now I will have to figure out who did it and send her to the laying flock to make EE's and olive eggers. BUMMER!

Hard to tell in this pic but it is green not blue.

Not one hundred percent sure, but I've been told the egg color trait is thrown by the boys. Would it be worth the investment to hatch and raise a few of those green egg babies to see if this is true? I know the Marans people tend to believe the egg color gene comes from the cockerel/roo side of the mix. I have four separate lines of BCM's and I have two separate lines of Ameruacanas. I am a seeing is believing type of guy, and trust no one. So, I use ALL of my boys in both breeds.
