Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Did you notice now that he's getting older, his beard is getting some white in it?

I thought they were supposed to lose the white as they age... I have a lot to learn... (how old is he?)
He has such beautiful lacing and hackles.

Yes, they are supposed to lose the white as they age. He appears to me to be losing the white, but I think one of his gals has pecked a bit of his muff & beard off and it just revealed a little more white than what you could see previously.

Ninny, the best to start out with are the blue, black and splash.

Hi, sorry it took so long, but that is one smart bantam. There was no catching her until today. I looked at the bottom of her feet and they are yellow. What color are they supposed to be to be an Ameracauna?

They are supposed to be white. Your bird has yellow skin not white = EE

Thank you, I didn't know that. And they are very yellow! Hmmm now what to do with her. I have 4 EE's now and no EE roo... and I wonder where the heck she came from. I only ordered 3 EE's.

Learn something new everyday.

The Black Ameraucana is always checking his face out and picking at it. As beautiful as she is, time to sell her.

I LOVE your birds Mahonri!

I need to find some more wheaten or BW girls. Having a hard time finding ones that I know are not somehow related to my roos. This is driving me crazy because it seems like everyone's birds can be traced back to Smith or Blehm. Why is it so important to always have different blood as opposed to other breeds?
It seems like if you constantly have to breed to unrelated birds you 'd have to keep building new pens and adding more birds to your flock.

If need be maybe I could draw a chart of my plan and it would explain what I'm talking about.

I think you just look for good type. Nice blue eggs, dark legs w/o feathers, muffs and beards .... you know all of that. Don't breed those that don't conform and then add in from others.

Next year I'll be getting either chicks or eggs from Royce (tailfeathers) and probably some eggs from Peachick. (best blue eggs) and perhaps some from Barb Campbell... I would have had some of hers but she answered my e-mail too late.

I'm going to get some eggs from Barbara too. She took a while to email me back as well. I have a pair from Royce- lovely birds! The roo is sooo sweet- what a mushball! I like their temperment- very similar to my LF cochins.

I have only bantam blacks, but getting some b/b/s hatching eggs next week. I just love b/b/s birds, but all of them are so pretty, I'm sure that whatever color a particular person has, they will tell you to get that one! haa haa!! This is my first winter with them. Mine are in a tractor - too many hawks and eagles to let them wander, and they do just fine!

Thank You!! How much do these guys run? Id be looking for one or two trios of breeder quality. Id be willing to drive a bit to get them. Whats the best way to not get EEs?

Hi Ninny! You would love this breed. I really love mine. They are so sweet and social. I just love their puffy cheeks and beards. There are a lot of reputable Ameraucana Breeders right here on this this BYC thread or you can look at the Ameraucana Club Breeder's list. Check the breeds color, comb type, leg color etc. You can ask to see a pic of egg color etc.

Let me try this post again. I don't know what went wrong. Looks like I've missed a lot of pages. I'll have to go back and read and look at everyone's beautiful bird pics. Mohonri you have a very pretty boy! How old is he? Thanks for sharing.
