Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Nate,

Your are good on the health requirements. As long as you are current on your NPIP test papers you won't need anything else in Arkansas. I believe there are some additional requirements for waterfowl but we aren't offering any waterfowl classes this time around. As you probably know the toughest State on testing and health requirements is Texas!

Yes, those numbered plastic bands will work. I get my wing bands form Smith Poultry supply. I use the aluminum Jiffy bands. I also tried the brass wing bands but they are a bit heavier and more expensive. Not sure why. Someone else may have some input on that.

I always show my breeders. And, I do lose points from some judges on condition but I do pretty well anyway. Some judges are real nuts about condition and it [i :

is[/i] a big part of the "points" but more and more shows are year round and the birds do have to molt sometime! <LOL> AND we do need to breed them.

Ann

NPIP? Is it a requirement to subject my birds to NPIP?

Thanks,
Nate

Hmmm . . . that's debatable. You want them to be mature and of breeding age . But I have shown birds a lot younger than that. The best time to show a pullet or hen would be just as they begin to lay, they usually look their best then and are peaking. Regarding cockerels, since I show rumpless birds I don't have to consider tail feather development, etc. so I am probably the wrong person to ask on that one. I will have some Jersey Giants out this Spring and I am waiting on their tails to develop fully before I show them. If they were Araucana I would have already had them at a show once they reached standard weight and were reasonably mature.

Rumpless?...That's the reason I was asking. I have a 3 month old red/brown headed blue rumpless Collonca pullet (my avatar) and her sister, a black bilaterally tufted/tailed Quetros. I know they are not show quality, colors and all, but I was just thinking about giving Araucanas some exposure. I was so surprised and delightfully happy when I hatched them. I thought they were just EE eggs. Later to find out that the lady had a black Araucana cock with some EE hens. There are more pics of them on "My Page". I am still trying to locate a Araucana cockerel for them and more Araucana eggs.

Thanks, Nate

>>My birds were tested by the State of Texas for Pollorum-Typhoid and Avian Influenza. They will get tested again in March so I will be good on that.<<

NPIP (National Poultry Improvement Plan) is Pullorum testing. Did you think I meant NAIS? : )

Your flock certification as stated above in your previous message is all you need to exhibit birds at our show.

What do you think of them? Is there an Araucana thread like this one.

I am going to pick up (2) black Ameraucana hens Sunday at the Ft, Worth Stock Show. I was looking at my black cocks today and both of their tails ride too high, neither at 45*. I may have to look for another cock.

Thanks,
Nate

Sorry . . . I thought you said in a previous message that they were EE's (crossbred). But I do see in your latest pix that they have some Araucana traits. If they aren't rumpless and tufted and have Araucana type they would be DQ'd.at the show. I have a lot of pix at my website of my Araucana if you are interested in seeing the various varieties. It's at SkyBlueEgg.com or Araucana.com - they both go to the same site. I don't know if there is an Araucana thread yet on here. Charlie Hinkle and Anne Cushing might have started one - they both have been breeding Araucana for years, and spend a lot of time on this forum.

Some show pics from NEPC this past weekend.

Oh he's looking good! I miss him, but I'm happy he's got a good home with you.

He got this boy from me, but was out of eggs I bought directly from John, so I can tell you that he's right at 7 months old now, so he does have a little more filling out to do. In fact, a lot of the B/L Splits are still really small, but I think he looks like he's going to turn out to be a pretty nice size. I miss him, he was such a friendly male, but I also bought 2 Lavender cockerel from John this summer and had them shipped, so I didn't need a third boy.

This male and one of the female Lavender/Black Splits from the same hatch had lighter beards. I keep meaning to ask John if they might be only heterozygous for beard and muffs. Could be, as they're still considered project birds and not perfected yet.

He had the best comb when I had him, and I remember pointing that out when I sold him. I think it still looks really good. It's kept it's shape very well, and is nice and tight.

Thank you all. I am so proud of my birdies and of course most of the credit goes to the breeders who developed this breed. I have knee surgery coming up next week but once I recover I will start up my breeding pens and am looking forward to results. I expect some hatching eggs will be available too!
