Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

Ha ha- I really don't care for the BW hens

But- my wheaten girls are getting red combs! They are in with the SW and wheaten roos, so hopefully it won't be too long!

I had an order of favorelles ship out (for my SW guy) on Monday. Figures- they aren't here yet and it's like 32 degrees out. So much for waiting for warmer weather to ship!

I received 15 blacks and 10 lavs from John Blehm about 2 weeks ago. This is my first time owning true ameraucanas. They are about two weeks old at the moment and SUPER flighty. I have other birds just about a week older from my mixed flock that are calm as can be, but these ameraucanas freak out everytime they even see someone anywhere close to their cage. They all jump up, make an awful racket and run to the edges of the cage where they proceed to try and escape through the mesh, which is unsuccessful and results in chicks piling up on top one another and what not. This is the first time I have ever experienced such an attitude from little chickens. What gives? Is this just the way they are? I do not find their behavior pleasant at all, it's like they think everything is going to kill them at a moments notice. It doesn't seem to me like others have reported similar things, what can I do to help them settle down???
Thanks guys and gals.

Sounds like they need some more "human contact time" I employ my 4 and 7 year old boys to "tame" the chicks...

I have 13 BB/S Ameraucana chicks that are about 2 weeks old from Paul and Angela Smith. I find it odd that the Black and Blue chicks are real friendly, and run up to and climb on our hands in the brooder. However the splash chicks think you are going to kill them if you just walk by the brooder. This makes no sense to me.

Good luck! Enjoy your quality stock! I know I am..

Wow...I that is adorable!!!! I have never seen a rooster actually that affectionate. Very cute!.

Been following this thread with interest...I purchased these 2 and being new to chickens was told they are Ameraucana's....would appreciate feedback. Both lay colored eggs - one is more blue than the other. The cuties in the background are my younger RIR's.

Thanks!

I read somewhere in this thread that if an Ameraucana chick hatches out with a single comb then it only has a 3% chance to have the blue egg gene. So, if it ends up being female, what color will it lay? Light brown?

Beautiful hens, but those are Easter Eggers, sorry. There is an EE thread here though.

Thanks...had that feeling. The sad thing is she advertises a lot and is now selling chicks - others will be duped as well.

It happens all the time. If I were to look up "Ameraucana" in my local Craigslist, I wouldn't find a single real one for sale. . . And a lot of "breeders" of Ameraucanas, one who even sold "rare colors" like Silver, Lavender, Buff, and Blue Wheaten. They were clearly not those colors and clearly EEs in the pictures, but even when I emailed the seller, they denied it.
