Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I don't post very often, but Kathy (Halo) encouraged me to share this one. This is the cockerel I got from her. Over the last 2 years, well over 100 chickens have used this exact same box, but no one else has done this. He thinks I'm a real jerk for getting the camera before I freed him...

Somewhat more flattering picture, but he's still highly annoyed:

They both look lovely. However, when you cross an Ameraucana with another breed, the offspring are Easter Eggers, and are no longer purebred. Since Easter Eggers are basically a mixed breed, there is no color restriction. Whatever color you like best is the one you should breed for. I also have a blue Easter Egger project going

I wish you luck with your project. My EE's here, as you call em, are from a PiPs-n-PeePs Jean Ribbeck cockerel I hatched and a John Blehm line girl from Heather Perkins. I guess you say they raise EE's? Judges will call them like I call them, and am sure Jean and Heather will call them Blue Ameraucanas. I HOPE! lololololololol

Now here is an EE, my glorious PINHEAD

Here are their parents of my chicks. I don't see EE's. I am new to Ameraucanas and would like to make sure though.

Well- I misread the post too- it sounded like you (lildinkem) were saying the mother of your blues was a sebright. I don't think she meant to insult your birds in any way- it was just the way your original post was written.

ETA: EEs are awesome. I don't know why they get such a bad wrap sometimes. I like crossing my ameraucanas & araucanas and seeing what kind of EEs I can get. Right now everyone and their sister are breeding BWs, so I figure why not add some colorful egg layers (EEs) to mine & my neighbor's flocks? Not everyone can afford pure breeder birds (straight run especially)- doesn't mean they shouldn't have pretty eggs too! Just sayin....

Sorry IF I sounded a bit harsh, it was meant in a humorous way. I don't know everyone who has or knows what EE's and true Ameraucanas are here. I see alot of EE's on this thread. And they are Ameraucanas, just the wrong color put together. But lay great blue eggs. I have an Orp like that. He was a Black taken to a Buff that still makes him an Orp, but not one that is an acceptable variety.
I too love my PINHEAD and his girls. Three of them lay only double yokers. Which makes it hard to hatch, but great to eat. I agree, nothing wrong with a good EE. Variety of colors are great. Their healthy and bigger on average then my Blues. But, I just started with my breeding program. Last year was getting good birds to breed with. And really appreciated the quality that both Jean and Heather have to share. I highly recommend them two ladies for quality Ameraucanas.

Just thought I would post a couple of current pictures from my PipsnPeeps babies. I absolutely LOVE these guys! I'm so excited to have a Silver pair, too - I think the Silver roos are so beautiful!

Here's Sherman, my Silver cockeral

My White cockeral (Percival) is a beauty, but he got himself all dirty, so I will have to post his pic later

pips&peeps :

I'm baaaacckkk from the show!!!

My white cock bird was Reserve AOSB under both judges this weekend. So, I did better this weeked than the past two shows. The judges were Gary Overton (yes, I pulled him aside and needled him about sebastopols) and Bart Pals.

Anyway, on the wheatens, they hatch with a skin colored pale leg and they turn slate as they mature. Light legs can be an issue in this variety, so you never want to breed a bird that does not have slate legs.

Jen (Ultasol) did well with her silkies too!

Oh, I bought some lavender ice babies they had for sale from Holderreads.......

DONT TELL MY HUSBAND!!!!!!!!!!

Oh my I busted out laughing again when I saw that picture. Seems like something that could be used around halloween to scare kids, hehehehehe.

I love all the pictures here.

Lildinkem, I did misread your post and thought you were crossing Ameraucanas with Seabrights. Sorry!

Your birds are still lovely, though

I am also starting my flock of Ameraucanas; have a black cockerapullet from Jean, and 6 more BBS eggs coming from her soonish.
