Ameraucana thread for posting pictures and discussing our birds

I just hatched some Black Ameraucanas that I got from Ebay. The seller claims that he got his stock from a Paul Smith. Anyways, I was happy with the egg color, but I just want to make sure that this is what a Black Ameraucana is supposed to look like when newly hatched. I know that my black Australorps have light colored undersides. Are Ameraucanas the same way? The egg to the right of the chick is the one that he (I'm hoping for a roo) hatched from. Thanks for any input.

Urbanfarmboi- Ah- I can't remember how old they are! Maybe Holly knows- we split the hatch. The guy in front is a blue wheaten. There were two of them and I kept the lighter baby. He attacks my rings and escapes every time I open the door

Thanks Holly!
They are getting so big- I'm going to have to move them again. I wish I could put them in with the big birds since they are almost as big as my 6 month old pullets- but I worry about my big roos hurting the pullets. I haven't had any takers on the other 2 wheaten roos- guess I'm going to offer them for free to make room for more colors. Fortunately- the one egg of mine that hatched seems to be a BW girl

I have terrible news. I came home yesterday to find all the Lavender chicks pecked the death. Nothing at all wrong with the black splits, not even a scratch.

I figured out which hen it was and moved her out of the pen. She would get highly agitated when the chicks got out of the nest and ran around, and was flarring up at them. They were running around in a spot where a Cochin hen had hatched 8 chicks a few days ago, but I'd moved that Cochin hen and her chicks Monday because two of the chicks were killed by one of the Ameraucana hens. I'm assuming the same hen! Those 2 chicks were both white cochin bantam chicks with a gray tinted down, so I wonder if my Ameraucana hen got confused yesterday with them all running around and thought the Lavender Ameraucana chicks were more of the white/gray cochin chicks? They were very similar in color.

After I took the Ameraucana hen out of the pen, I watched everyone for at least two hours on and off and everything seems to be ok now. Even the dad was good with the chicks while they were out running around and was calling them to the food. A total gentleman. I'm keeping a close eye on them today just in case. They were such big healthy babies. I'm just sick over this.

I have about a dozen eggs in the incubator, Lavender X Black/Lavender split. Keep your fingers crossed for me for a good hatch with plenty of Lavenders.

Sherry, I am so sorry!

That had to have been awful to find. Keeping everything crossed for a good hatch from the ones in the incubator. And a virtual "punt" to that hen!

Sorry to hear about your babies.

I sent 3 Lavender split eggs to the hatcher yesterday.

I also just set 15 BBS eggs, so hopefully those will come along too! Still on the quest for more W/BW eggs.
