lildinkem- just a FYI, ameraucana have muffs and beards, araucana have tufts

You have to remember he is standing next to silver pullets. They are running around 3-3 1/2 lbs, so he's probably not all that big. I suggest you weigh him for a better idea of his actual size.

Ameraucana weight standards:

Cockerels 5 1/2 lbs
Cocks 6 1/2 lbs

Pullets 4 1/2 lbs
Hens 5 1/2 lbs

I'll try to weigh him soon. I'll also get a better picture while I'm at it. He's already grown since that one, and is looking nice. I think he has a good top line but needs to hold his tail higher, which he might do once he toughens up. Right now he's low man, even though he's bigger than the Lav roo (who is a little small but decent size for a Lavender).​

Exactly. (referring to post 2773). And there are some really interesting errant genes out there. For example, Ive hatched a couple of generations of black rocks, probably 100 chicks. Absolutely gorgeous, with green sheen, big fluffy birds. I have one growing out that looks birchen. How in the world that popped up from 2 black birds that are black for 2 generations is beyond me. But it did.

The lavender gene is even more insidious in a BBS flock, because they can look blue. And when you go breeding that bird, thinking its blue, you add a gene that doesnt need to be there. When Im hatching BBS, I want the babies BBS, nothing else.

That's what we were thinking as well but this is the first we have had this breed so we weren't sure what each one might look like.

I have a rare combo of mutt cock. Who is 12 lbs or more. In this pic was taken in Oct of 09. BUS was hatched 4 weeks after I got my Akers Buff Opr hens last spring. He is only 7 months old here.

I just wanted to make some Akers Blue Orps and Black Orps. Never expected another breed I could use in with. Seeing we all here are wanting to increase size. IF you know he can throw a self blue & potentially is part Ameraucana, would you guys use him?

I would NOT. If you just want Lavender chickens, or Lavender Easter Eggers, then sure, but it would be many, many, many generations before you could breed out all those other unwanted genes and get to something that even looked like the Lavender Ameraucanas of today, and even more generations before those birds would breed true. Lavender Ameraucanas aren't as "RARE" and hard to find as they were a few years ago. You can find them fairly easily, and find the splits (carriers) even easier. In fact, I'll probably end up with quite a few black/Lavender split males at the end of the season that I'll be practically giving away.
